With the IPT tour making an impact on the pool world, I was wondering who are the great unknown players of today, and who would you rate as the greatest unknowns of all-time?

I heard that Paul Thornly of Toronto was one of the best road players of his time.

Port Chester Mickey

Went through some of the greats like butter. Unfortunately with many pool players was a user of drugs.

There was this guy named Vincent Lauriea, he had to be the best. He was cocky but he could back it up. I seen him drill keith mcCready once and told him to stick the spot up his ass. Last I heard he was excepted to west point military school. Its weird the guy is at west point but I used to remember when he was selling babies toys at kids world.

yea thats the guy...What a player could have been a worldbeater. That guy was pretty good at arcade games also. He once showed up at my poolroom and set a high score to mrs pac man.

Until recently, I'd say that Stevie Moore was definitely one of the best unknown players.

Vernon Elliot get my vote for best of all time.

From New Orleans it would have to be the infamous Ernie Sellers who regularly traveled the country slaughtering lambs wherever he went. Ernie was known for his prowess in slipping into pool rooms, cornering a lamb and never letting one get away. The "watchers" seldom knew who he was and he always got the money or at least that's the way the legend goes.

The story was confirmed by local players visiting other pool halls in other parts of the country (New Jersey)

I do believe ....

that U.J. Puckett ran under-the-radar for quite awhile.

There also have been 'Businessmen' in the past that have played real
good, but did not play many tournaments and such, but would privately
match up for the money.

And I will never forget my first experiences in meeting:
1) Buddy Hall - before he turned pro
2) or Coy Lee Nicholson

How about them boys on our chatline from Traverse City Michigan...The Big Hurt and Crew?

Best one I know of today is Lizard.

Cheers,

not a road player but I'll through the name out anyways. Jeff Boucher from Montana. Still to this day I struggle to find players that play much better and knowone knows him.

Id say Stevie Moore, esp in the early 90s. Great florida players that have run under the radar but are very difficult to beat include David Grossman, John Foster and Wil Bilbrey.

A good player here in florida told me an interesting Bilbrey story. Bilbrey was matched up racing to 9 for an modest wager and is losing 8-6 but breaking. Before he breaks he walks over to this player and whispers "try to get side action". So this player goes around and gets a little over 2k side action and then signals to Bilbrey, who then puts together a three pack to close the set out.

little al mason, although known fairly well in the dallas area, dont know if would be recognized much anywhere else. STRONG player, i believe he is even mentioned in a book The Miz wrote and he said if you are ever in the dallas area watch out for a skinny guy named little al.

Don Willis also comes to mind. I think one of you was related to him. Huckster maybe?
