I remember Mike Sigel had an incredible streak in '86 or '87. He won something like 8 out of 12 events in one of those years. He only made a little over $100,000 but the dollar had a bit more value back then.

Nick Varner had a year in '89 or '90 where he won something like 11 out of 12 tournaments that he entered. I don't think anyone will ever top that.

If we talk about $$ made in a year, I think Efren's $ 650,000 or Earl's $ 1,000,000 (didn't get all) is the best years.

In 2006, when the IPT was running, Reyes made 644,960$ and Hohmann nearly 400,000$, with few player in the 200,000$ area.
Souquet made 172,000$ last year and SVB 147'000$. Alcano made 161,754$ when he won the 9 ball world championship.
Reyes also took 215,362 in 2001 when he won the Tokyo 9 ball event (~160,000 for the first place).
I would say a very good year in pool is about 150,000$.
Maybe you need to change the title of your post. You said greatest pool player ever, you didn't say most tournaments won consecutively or most money won in a year, or most money ever, or talk about top player for consecutive years in a row.
I thought the person thought being the best pool player ever was Willie Mosconi. He ran so many balls on bigger tables, and crappier equipment too. I wouldn't be able to play worth a damn using the stuff they had back then. One of their cues with a nice tip might be good though.

The US Open is not included, but with it included, this is the facts:
Only 1 player has more than $ 100,000 this year (Mika with $ 167,000).
Only 1 player has made between $ 75,000 and $ 100,000 (Ralf Souquet)
Only 3 players have made between $ 50,000 and $ 75,000 (Shane Van Boening, Thorsten Hohmann, Darren Appleton).
On Sunday we are entering the 11th month of this year. All the top 5 mentioned will get minimum $ 10,000 more because of the Mosconi Cup, and Niels Feijen ($ 46,000) will make more than $ 50,000 this year with his performance in the Mosconi Cup.
The rest of the players will have to perform well at either the World Ten Ball Championship or the All Japan Championship (invitational for foreigners, I believe) to have a chance of making more than $ 50,000 on tournaments in 2009...
