Grinding a weight bolt

My friends cue is a little too heavy for him. Rather then cut the weight bolt he was thinking about just grinding some of the threads off the end of the bolt to reduce the weight.
Does this make sense?

How much weight are you looking to save.....just grinding the threads off wont do much unless I am understanding this wrong.

He thinks maybe an ounce. So he may grind it very thin. I thought he should just cut off a 1/4 inch at a time off the length until it feels right. I also suggested that he remove the weight bolt and see if it is a common one that can be had in different lengths.

if it's steel 3/8 x 16 , 3" weighs about 1 ounce
if it's aluminum , 3" weighs about 1/4 oz.

If he cuts or grinds tell him to put a threading die on first. Then when he is done he can undo the die leaving fresh threads. He may want to have a small file as well so he can take any burs off. If he does not he chances ruining the threads inside the cue and a simple thing becomes costly.

Your friend, wink wink.
Why dont you call the factory and order another bolt. Dont forget there is a big time difference from here to china. Lol
Shame you do not know any cuemakers that could cut it down for you.

Nice try Chris. I sold my McFadden cue to a friend.
Now that you mention it I do know a world class cue maker but his name escapes me at the moment. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM think.
I'll mention that maybe he should have a pro look at it.
