I just received my Grizzly 14 inch ultimate band saw. I got the anniversary edition. It is the same saw with a fancy black paint job and is on sale for $445 plus $79 shipping.
It came in 2 boxes. The base box weighs about 40lbs and the main saw box about 200lbs.
I built the base first. Pretty straight forward. Couldn't find the manual so I downloaded it from the Grizzly site. The base is heavy duty... you could park a car on it even though it is only heavy sheet metal.
Opened the big box.. No manual. The main body of the saw is assembled. Basically all that is left to put on is the table and fence assembly.
It is packed in between 2 very thick styrafoam molds that protect it during shipping. There were no scratches on the pretty paint job. I couldn't lift it out of the box. I called my son inlaw to come over and help me put it on the stand. He didn't complain...he shouldn't,.. he's been screwing my daughter for over 20 years.
After the saw is up on the base and bolted down, the only thing left is installing the table and fence assembly.
I found the manual under the cast iron table in the bottom of the box. Wouldn't you expect it to be on top when you open the box??? instead of under 200lbs of iron.
Then comes the tune up. Using a big straight edge, it became obvious the the lower drive wheel needed to be shimmed out about 1/4 inch to be coplaner with the top wheel. I removed the lower wheel and made a delrin spacer to put on the shaft. The bolt that holds on the lower wheel is a left hand thread. The wheels were now in line but I also had to loosen the set screws in the motor pulley and move it out 1/4 inch to line the drive belt up.
I bought a 1/2 inch blade to replace the 3/8 that is supplied. I had to fiddle a little with the blade tensioner as the blade that comes on it appears to be a 92 1/2 instead of a 93 1/2 that is called for. Adjusting the blade guide rollers is easy but a little time consuming to get it right. I replaced one of the roller bearings as it was binding and was hard to Turn. The roller bearings are the same as the top bearing in a PC router and also roller skates... (608).
All in all, it is a great saw for a great price. I am very happy with it. You do need a little more than basic mechanical ability to put it together and tune it up.
