Ok, maybe should be in npr but I saw this today and thought it might be cool for a pool cue. Customer paid $800 for 2 1' x 5' x 1" butt seamed together, just the wood!

What are these things that cost $800?

Looks pretty rough. At 1" thick, there is pretty much nothing that can be used to make a pool cue.

Turn it round and make some 5/8ths joint collars. Point stock. Expensive pen blanks.

That is some expensive wood. Is it going to be sanded down or have a finish put on it?
Is it swamp cypress?

It is sanded, stained, and finished already in these pics!

Looks like some kind of palm, bamboo, or quarter-sawn wenge. Whatever it is, it definitely has a cool looking texture.

It's the edges of OSB plywood laminated together and stained!

Looks good, congratulations. That is a lot of labor but you definitely created some good looking art from trees that aren't endangered.

Did you cut it on a band saw? What kind of glue did you use? I assume the surface is coated in resin.

Just wanted to clarify: the company I work for is doing the stone table this piece of wood is being inlaid into, we don't do any woodwork. I had very little involvement in this particular job and nothing to do with fabricating it. Just thought the wood looked cool and then was amazed when I was told what it is.
