So many times have I heard of pool players likened to the gunslingers of the old west......It seems somewhat appropriate to me, since when 2 top players meet up, they want to see who can "outshoot" each other.....and with some of the famous names in pool, how can you not draw a comparison to some of those old gunslingers?

Cole Dixon
Shannon Daulton
Cory Deuel
Johnny Archer
Earl Strickland
Buddy Hall (the Rifleman)
Billy (the Kid) Aguerro
Gabe Owen
Keith McCready
Luther Lassiter
Irving Crane
U.J. Puckett

Some fine names for a western shoot-em up movie, if you ask me.....anybody think of any others?

Smokey Bartlett, BlackJack? Haven't heard that name in ages. Use to run with him when he lived here, under another sobriquet. Scored more chicks than Elvis.

Beard trimming and a haircut knocked about 10 years off of you Bill. You look good! Ya gotta love Smokey Joe. Looked like a smaller version of Tommy Lee Jones. Of course I don't think Tommy has all the war wounds that Smokey sports.:)

Everyone I knew use to compare Smokey's appearance to charles Manson and he did with the hair and beard. You were the first person to ever compare him to Tommy Lee Jones. The closer I looked at him the more he did look like Tommy Lee's twin brother. I have a photo of him sans beard and long hair but if I posted it and he got wind of it I would have to be looking around every corner. Smokey had more surgical scars than anyone I know that lived. He inflicted a few as well.

Trudi, got fed up with the long hair and beard on me, dogginda9. Said it had to go or I had to go.

Johnny Roberts of Lubbock flew me to Texas to play Smokey Years and years ago. It was my first trip to Texas. I ended up stying in Texas for about 4 months. There was lots of action in those days.

Great name, great game. I haven't seen Smokey since the late 80's early 90's.

Jumped balls as good as anybody---the only time you had him "safe" was when you made him shoot away from the object ball...

You ever see Smokey do the two handed, jacked up. cross jump shots for the cash?

T'was a thing of beauty!

He used to carry that 12 ounce full length one piece bar cue around with him to jump with.

And you're right about the ladies.

You're right, ribdoner. Shooting away from balls wasn't his long suit. Jumping balls, with a full cue was. Golf on the 5X10 was my long suit in the 70s here. Smokey use to put in with me playing golf or one pocket, which at the time he didn't play at all. I put in with him on any bar box action. He got tired of watching the golf ring games and jumped in. He lost money the first couple of days. Within a week he was holding his own. The second week after winning a long game with 6 pleyers in it, he strings 18 holes together. Remember, this wasn't on John Henderson's 6X12 "Big Bertha" but a medium tuff 5X10.

It is just as you say, if he had to kick at balls he wasn't the favorite but playing a run-out game he excelled.

Last time I ran into Smokey was in Vegas in 96. I had become relegated to playing as an APA-4, but a pretty good 4, LOL. I walked into the tournament room and Smokey was playing Johnny Ervolino even one pocket. He wouldn't play me one pocket in the 70s, now he was playing Ervolino even. When he saw me he yelled, "You're next". I passed.

Some of the best in the West (and East and Dixie and Yankee Country) are relatively unknown to many, sometimes by their own design. ;)

Some players I'd add to the list are: Scotty Townsend, Geese, Patcheye, Larry Lisciotti, Strawberry, Jimmy Reid, Ronnie Allen, Kentucky Colonel, Bear, Allen Hopkins, Piggy, Ronnie Wiseman, Vernon Elliott, Kid Delicious, Rocky Creek, Groundhog, Sparky, Louie Roberts, Wade Crane, John Henry, Billy Stephens, Roanoke Red, Seattle Sam, Calhoun, Tony Watson, Buffalo Frank, Cornbread Red, just to name a few.

These are the "real" gunslingers, not the tournament soldiers of today who whine and cry about the racks, the lint on the table, and the inferior equipment. Gunslingers are players that show no fear, play all games and on any equipment. "You got the money, honey, I got the time."

Thanks for the additional names, and I will add that when I started this thread, I was thinking more about the way the names sounded in relation to gunslingers of the old West, and not really the person's character....

Sounds familiar. Any of you old dudes out there remember, Jesse Justice?

I knew a Charlie Justice, really good money player.
He died a few years ago (liver gave up on him).

Shame...

I remember seeing Smokin Joe back in the early 90's. He showed me and some other young players his method of picking out a house cue to jump with.
He would find the lightest cue available, usually a 16oz and stab the tip end repeatedly into the floor trying to get it as hard as possible.

I had heard about his "surgical scars" also and was curious about them but still being a youngster was to afraid to ask.
