Hagan Cue - A rare cue to see ;)

As some of you may know, Hagan cues are one of a kind, all hand made by Bill. Many of his cues have Buckhorn instead of Ivory. This one has a buckhorn joint and matching buckhorn rings on the shafts. The ringwork is incredible on this cue. Also, Bill used a secret splicing method for his cues.

This cue is quite old, and could use a refinish so the pink ivory would stand out a bit more.

Hagan Cues

I would love to know how many cues Bill Hagan made. He has to be right up there the absolute best cuemakers, and I mean the very top.

I have one of his cues and it plays incredible. The shafts are slightly longer than the butt.

I hope he is still around, and making use of his skills.

Anyone interested in seeing the my cue let me know.

Bill Hagen used to use a full length 29" piece of wood split down the middle, reversed and glued back together. He felt that the lamination kept the cues stable. I've worked on several Hagen cues over the years. He built his own pantograph and used it to do some rather fancy inlay-work and of course, his use of buckhorn for joints and ferrules was on every cue of his I've seen. Since he moved away from my area (Ohio) they've become quite scarce, don't know if he's still making cues or not. It was just a hobby for him when he was building cues. I believe he was a tool and die maker at GM before he retired out west.

Thanks Sherm, I saw the dot inlays at the top of the points, and they reminded me of the bottom of a full splice. How do they hit? What do you think about the re-orienting of the grain? Does it make it a lot stiffer?

All-

Some other questions. My shafts are slightly longer than the but, is that the norm or different?

I was told when I showed my cue to a cue dealer at Derby City that several of his cues have been sent to Japan because of the buckhorn verses the ivory of others.

I was offered $1K for the cue. I actually thought the price was a little high, and then it made me wonder if this guy as offering that he must be sending it over there too. I didnt trade and I still have the cue.

Again, is there an estimate of number of Hagan cues out there?

$800-$1000 seems about right for what the market was doing on most Hagan cues a few years back. We have not come across any within the last year.

It's been a long time, but I sold a similar Hagan cue about 5 years ago with satinwood, ebony, and lots of buckhorn. It was comparable to this one work-wise and a Japanese collector purchased it from me.

BTW, I believe that this cue was one we had on display (Murphey cues booth) a few shows ago at the Super Billiards Expo. It's a super nice cue with the pink ivory and buckhorn. Normally you wouldn't think much of those two materials going together...but the really work in this cue. The yellowing of the finish kind of hides the beauty that's underneath.

If you hit with it, you'd sell all of your cues.
Hagan made his cues really thin. Nasty lacquer finish too.
But, they hit like a dream.
There's a reason you don't see to many used ones.
They're not really that pretty.
Then again pretty doesn't sell that well anymore imo.
Cues that hit great do.

My Hagan Cue

Attached is the photo of my Hagan cue.

As mentioned earlier, the butt is rather thin. It is made of osage orange, ebony and buckhorn. It has 2 shafts, plays great. The ringwork is amazing.
