I really like the design of this cue. I know nothing about the history of Hagan Cues though, sorry.

Bill Hagan made most of his cues in Ohio. He was an autoworker who moved to Arizona after retiring and while he _may_ have made some cues in Arizona, I think he'd pretty much retired from cuemaking as well. He had some unusual techniques, often usine a one piece butt (no "A" joint) and sometimes ripped the 30" turning square lengthwise, ran the pieces through a jointer and after reversing the orientation of the pieces glued them back up before turning it round and tapering it. He also was fond of buckhorn and used it almost exclusively for joints and ferrules. Being from about 100 miles from where he was making cues here in Ohio, I had the opportunity to work on a lot of them over the years and have seldom found a straight butt on a Hagan cue. Sherm, you are right on about him splitting the Forearm Wood and Turning it and putting it back together. I have never seen this, it is interesting. I'm trying to figure out why? I guess to try something different. It looks nice.

I believe he made the butts like this for a better hit and balance, among other things. He didn't like to use cheap wood under the wrap.
That's a nice loooking one you have. See if you can find were he spliced the BEM (there should be distinct line running the length of the forearm, probably right through the center of one of the points).

Yes axejunkie the splice does go right through one of the points. It actualy looks neat. LOL I will try and get a picture posted later today.

Are the shafts longer than the butt too?
BH liked to buy 3/4 by 3 wide boards. Split them in half and fold them over.
His thinking was 3/4" boards reached equilibrium faster.

Yes Joey you are right. The shafts are 29 1/2" and Butt is a little Shorter, 28 1/2". The Butt does have a slight wobble and a couple of small blimishes, but I'm not going to touch it. It is a Very Nice Cue Which I Believe To Be Collectable.It hits Great and I just Don't Believe It should Be Altered.

Put me on the bandwagon too. I LOVE HAGAN CUES.
All of them I have seen I have fell in love with. This one appears to be a dandy.
They have thinner handles and the shafts are longer than the butts. They played great. The butt handle is about as thick as a Tad cue.
As far as collectablity, those like me who know about Hagan cues are ALWAYS looking for a nice one. They dont come up often and command a good price.
Sherm in Cincy was a good friend of his and probably the most knowledgable about them IMO.
If you decide you would like to sell, I would be interested too.
There hasnt been alot of true innovators but alot of followers, Hagan was an innovator with his cues.

thats a great cue, i sure wouldnt touch it.
One thing thats going to become a issue in cue collecting over the next 10 years since there is going to be so many new fancy cues-the question of a older or vintage cue being refinished or all origonal will become a big thing. In Watches if a 50 year old Rolex has been refinished its worth less than a re-finished watch of the same model. Same will hold true in cues-mark my words. Five years after Gus passed away no one would think twice about having a Gus refinished, now that dosent look like the smart play to me. new shafts are fine to play with, using a Gus is the greatest idea period. But to cut off a seasoned origonal Gus wrap-I dont think thats to smart.
