Handkerchief Legal?

Shiver me timbers.

I've played at a hall the has these 'not so hard' rubber pockets. (not that uncommon thought, other places also) When I get a shot that is to close the edge of the table to use a normal bridge and straight away from the pocket, I want to lay my cue stick on the pocket to shoot. At these tables when I go to the next shot there is this rubber crap on my shaft. I try to get it off, then is balls up. Finally I get impatient, try to shoot the next shot with a sticky shaft with these little rubber rolls all over it and miss the damn shot.

I'm fairly sure that if I said something ahead of time, my opponent wouldn't mind. But it they did, I'm wondering if it would be illegal to lay a cloth handkerchief over the pocket while playing these shots? (Keeping it handy in my back pocket to make sure it isn't making me take to long, and of course if any ball headed that way, you've got to remove it before the ball gets there)

sounds perfectly fine to me. you might run into a few nit picky assholes every now and then(especially in leagues.....LOL)

go for it, sounds like a good idea.

I lay my Cue Kleen cloth over the corner metal pockets when shooting on the bar boxes. I only had one jerk tell me that it is illegal to do that in the tournament in Vegas. I looked at him am said I am not in Vegas. It really pissed him off because it was also the winning shot.

I then told him that I am not going to ruin my cue by scraping it on the metal. He just kept mumbling and being a bigger jerk.

Sounds fine to you but what does the book say? Is it legal?

I remember seeing Mr. Okumura, who is a top player from Japan, doing this on many occassions including the US open against Mr. Strickland. I believe he was trying to block the reflection of the light from the metal plate by the pocket.
I do not recall seeing any foul being called when he put his handkerchief on the rail under his cue. Although there were questions from the ref and discussions among the officials as to the reason behind him doing it, once everything was cleared up, he was allowed to shoot with a handkerchief under his cue as far as I can remember.

I think a piece of soft leather would be better, both for protection of the cue and for staying better on the pocket...and come to think of it, for looks. After all, who wants a snotty hanky all over the table---yuk!

Get yourself a Q-Wiz.. it's great for burnishing your shaft & works great around pockets. The Q-Wiz cost $8 & it will last you a couple years.

If Earl can shoot with finger extensions (lol), then I personally don't have a problem with anyone using a hanky. But, to add my two cents worth to the original question...I have encountered the same problem and furthermore the GC III in my house does the same thing. I just wipe my shaft after the shot with whatever cotton shirt I have on at the time...takes the gummy crap off every time!

I ran into the same issue on some old Gold Crowns at one the area pool halls. I keep a hankerchief in my back pocket when I play and I asked my oppenent beforehand if it would be ok to lay it on the rubber if necessary and no one has objected yet-

I have a friend who use to carry a small swatch of 860 simmonis around in his pocket for that very purpose. It was about the size of apack of cigarettes. it worked real well

This same question was asked of a BCA Ref at a northwest Regional BCA Event. But he was asked if it was legal to use a hand towel to protect the cue.
He said it was legal as long as the towel does not effect the shot.
