Why do you think burnishing makes a shaft smoother and harder? Concerning warpage I don't believe it makes any difference which way you hang or cart a shaft. Warpage usually results from unequal drying of the "surface" of the wood and whether up or down if it's going to warp it will. A cuemaker's wish to all. "May your shaft hang straight and hard".

There are alot who hang there shafts by the tip end, not going to say it's wrong, but after talking to many who do this, the main reason I got was weight/gravity pulling down to help the shaft "not" warp. I hang mine the opposite way, Joint up, if the shaft is going to warp I want it to warp in my shop, not in the customers hands, like anything nothing is 100%, I just think it's a better way to ensure quality.

I always thought makers hung their shafts to save floor space.

Pretty much so..........it sure was a pain in butt taking them down, unscrewing the little hook thingy, puttin it in the machine, waiting for it cut,
taking it out of the machine, screwing the little hook thingy back in and then making sure it gets hung back up so it can laugh at the next one getting ready to go through the same process............

I hang mine from cup hooks on the ferrule end of the shaft. I do it this way as it seemed the orderly way to do it to me. I have a two door cabinet, 36 wide X 24 deep X 78 tall. I have the cues hanging from wood strips 24 inch long and each strip holds about 24 shafts. I have 20 sets of runners on the bottom shelf 32 inches from the bottom This lets me hang approx. 500 shafts. When turning shafts I take a strip of 25 and hang it onto 2 screws on the wall near my shaft machine. I also hang a blank strip next to it and after the shafts come out of the shaft machine they go onto the empty one. If I'm using Nelsonite on that pass then they go into the tank and then into the empty one. As cluttered as my shop is it is much easier carrying the strip of 25 to the shaft machine than it would be trying to roll a cart around.
