Hard Times Bellflower

Hey everyone recently discovered Hard times in Bellflower is only a 15min drive from my work and discovered they have a 1 pocket tournament first Saturday of the month. Does anyone know the competition there as I've never played one pocket but find it interesting but not sure if that would be a tournament too rough to start off with and would be better off starting one pocket with a few bucks a set to learn instead from a skilled player at my local pool hall(I don't have much money maybe $20 to start with one pocket)
 
I don't have any personal experience with the place, but by its reputation, Hard Times is a (or the) pool mecca in the US. I imagine the competition at that tourney is as stiff as it gets at a weekly tourney. Wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the very best in the world stop by and play. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be worth it--certainly you will learn, even if they wipe the table with you. So, it's likely tough, but probably worth going anyway.

Perhaps someone else knows more from personal experience.

Easy pickins. Probably not a guy in the place that can run three balls. If that guy in my avatar shows up bet real high 'cause he's a sucker.

If you'd like you can come to the One Pocket Tournament at Golden Cue Billiards every 2nd Saturday of the month. It's handicapped. Anyway the Hard Times One-Pocket is only $20 to play. You should play it anyway and learn a thing or two.

I'm already subscribed to your channel it's great and saw you and Efren Tuesday with Carlo at Hard Times. I'm not great shit I'm only a 5 on APA..... Regardless I wanted to learn one pocket but wasn't sure if starting my first game at hard times would be too rough to start with. I may try at golden cues though as its near my uncles
 
You'll run into some pretty strong players at the Hard Times One Pocket... Santos is usually in, The Barber... it isn't a cakewalk, for sure.
 
OP,playing in tournaments against good players is a great way to improve your game.In fact,it is one of the essential components to learning.Without doing it,you will not improve.

You'll improve,but it's much easier to plateau and harder to improve competitively...

Agree totally,assuming that you mean a person will plateau if they are not subjecting themselves to tough competition on a regular basis and only practicing and playing friendly games.

I had already made plans for today since Super Bowl Sunday but if u were there Tuesday I think I may have already seen you unless someone else there uses crutches. I think I may start playing there either Monday's or Tuesday's though likely Tuesday

Not me.

Just Started using the crutches again Thursday and I haven't been to hats tomes in a while.

Find a copy of Jack Koehler's "Upscale One Pocket." It will really make you aware of the basics. Then play the Hard Times monthly 1 Hole tournament. After you are eliminated stay and watch the remainder of the tournament. That will make a heck of a $20.00 lesson.
 
Prob plenty to learn just watching. Save your $20 for crutches rental, maybe some dude will let you rent his for a couple of laps arount the going for 5 or 10$.
 
If you want to learn the game that would be a good way to do it. Just hanging around and watching the all the matches while you wait or after you're out would be worth the time.
 
Is there any specific videos that are also good to learn from? I've been watching a few from Efren Reyes but I'm wondering if there's specific matches anyone may recall that just had exquisite one pocket play

How good you are at nineball is not completely related to your skill in one pocket. I know a few guys that I can beat even in one game, but not the other, and visa versa. It's a different way of thinking and playing.

Read books, practice drills, and watch. Welcome to one of the most enjoyable and rewarding games in billiards.
