Has a new era arrived?

Earl, Efren, Parica, Varner, Archer, Busta and all players of the year back in the 90's can't win big titles anymore ( except for Effie's one pocket titles ).
10 more years Fatboy might beat Jay in banks.:D

I'd offer Ralf Souquet, who will be 39 next week, as another veteran still making some big statements in the premier events. He won the 2006 Derby City 9-ball event, he won the 2006 BCA Open, he won the 2006 World Pool Masters and he was second in the WPC in 2006. In addition, in the two huge-field IPT events last year, he posted two top ten finishes.

Still, your observation is clearly correct. The torch has been passed and the veteran players have never had a tougher time winning titles.

Wasn't IPT a pretty big title?

1999? 2006 or something?

Anyway I agree on that Earl and Efren sure has stuff to prove.

Efren won the IPT King of the Hill in 2005, the Derby City 9-ball event in 2005, and the IPT Reno event in 2006. He is the best one pocket player and keeps proving it. Nothing to prove.

Obviously, Earl has produced little since his 2002 world championship.

I think The Pearl has been up and down since 2000. In 2005 he was shootin some great 9-ball at the open.

There has been a lot of young guys dogging it over the last couple of years imho.

Liked the world 10-ball tourney, it had oldies and newcomers that shot lights out.

Besides there arent enough big titles to letem all get one a year.

I agree completely, but I must add, that if Pool was in Olympics at 2008, Efren would won that - then he would retire with peaceful mind.

Actually, if Pool became Olympic Sport after couple of years from now, Efren would still win it.
I know the next Olympic year would be 2012, even then Efren might still win, but this is hypotethical anyway as this is not happening.

Everytime Efren has challenged HIMself, he has won. (Actually, he lost the first (and only) Philippine Open at 2003 to Mika, 12-13, which really bugged him..)

But still:

When Matchroomsports organized the first WPC (at 1999), it was by far the biggest and most exiting tournament ever held - Efren won.

When there was this mammoth 9-ball tournament at Japan 2001, where winner got by far the biggest paycheck ever 165 000$(that time) - Efren won. (some rumours said there were 800 participants, don't know for sure..)

When there were the first 8-ball WPC at the Emirates, at 2004 - Efren won. (eventhough the money wasn't enormous, it was a big Title with all the best players, and the official WC Crown.)

When there was the first IPT tournament, the King Of The Hill (2005), and the biggest payday ever - Efren won.

When there was the first IPT World Open (2006) and by far the biggest Payday (again) - Efren won (again).

(The NA Open, which Thorsten won and Effie came 5th, was just a warm up for the Reno World Open ;))

Efren nature is not a 'Title defender' (in Majors), nor even 'Title renewer'(in Majors again).
One time, and in most of the cases the first time, is for him. Then he's motivated and hungry for the win. He want's the World to know.

I've noticed already many years ago, that at the WPC, Efren really hasn't been a threat to win it at all. (I guess same with the US Open.) He has won it already once, he's content about it, and the rest of the field are much more hungry.
In smaller tournaments, like San Miguel Asian Tour couple of years back, he used to dominate, cos he just played for fun without too much pressure in anything.
Also, One Pocket is different thing, as he really seems to like it in his late years, the DCC is only once a year, so he does challenge him self year after year to win it. Also, in that game, he's just so much better than the rest.
I don't want to jinx him, but I believe that when he loses first time the 1-P title there for someone, he'll lose some inspiration for that also, and he will be much easier to win after that in 1-P (the age factor..).

The young guys are moving on up, but I'll take Efren playing any game(except bank)against any human.

And who are the new guys?

Thorsten
Alcano
Shane
Orcullo
Corteza
Manalo
Jasmin
Schmidt
Feijen

I'm getting dizzy... Then there's always Pagulayan and Deuel.

Unless straight pool is included, I don't think Jasmin is as deserving of being on this list as nearly-as-youthful Ga Young Kim and Xiaoting Pan. Ga Young Kim already has both a World championship and a US Open title. Xiaoting Pan has a World championship and won at WPBA Michigan City this year. Contrastingly, after her big win at the 2006 BCA pro event, Jasmin did not have a win against the top women in the world this year.

Finally, 18 year old Wu Chia Ching surely belongs on your list.

I'd probably lose my dough, but I'd still bet on Efren playing any of the guys who are winning tournaments these days if they played a long set of 9-ball or 10-ball. I'd probably stumble over myself trying to get a bet down fast enough if they played something other than those two games (not including banks).

10 weeks, not 10 years, soon as i get back in stroke again he will be finished, i went from playing great to bad in 2 weeks, when ever that happens i come back stronger, strange.

WPC I mean.
IPT 8-ball ?
Sure that was huge. Biggest purse of all time.:)
Efren did beat an old-has-been for the title.:D

No...the IPT World Open he beat Rodney Morris for the title. And even in the IPT King of the Hill he beat a huge field.

One of my teammates, who is a great player, told me that whenever he went into a slump he'd come out of it stronger than before. I agree with that, sometimes I think the slumps are all in our minds. We play great one night (or so we think) & then the next night we feel a little off, but still win. I've had this for the last 2 weeks & ended up unbeaten!

Maybe we expect too much of ourselves, but I couldn't call that a bad thing!

Considering Jasmin only played in 4 WPBA events (I don't understand why the WPBA has a system where one of the best players in women's pool is not invited to every event) and finished 2nd, 3rd and 9th twice. In the event she finished 3rd it was behind Corr and Alison. In one of her 9th place finishes she only lost to Alison (twice due to the luck of the draw).

She did win the women's invitational World Pool Masters and she did beat some of the best male players in the world in 9 ball (including Tony Robles in a TV match). This is beside her 14-1 victories where she is probably the best woman player in the world. She also finished high in some Euro event against the top men in the world.

In my opinion she is AS deserving to be on the list.

You've won me over with a nice, informed, post. I agree. Guess I'd have all three of Pan, Kim and Ouschan on the list.
