Has Anyone Punched Out Earl?

Alex Higgins Head butted a referee during a tourny among other things WORSE than Earl ever thought about. You really know your snooker history.

http://metro.co.uk/2007/06/12/snooker-legend-higgins-attacks-ref-444586/

In that article it says that Higgins was banned for a year, in the process hurting him in the pockets. Would you call that letting him get away with such actions?

And forgive me for not knowing my snooker history, I forget that I need to know every pin point fact about every game ever played to have a discussion.

I certainly admire his game & watching him play. I even enjoy his antics, very entertaining to me, no telling what he'll come off with. That being said, I've rarely witnessed anyone more deserving of a thorough thumping !!! LOL

A few comments:
I. Jay Helfert did a good job covering that match.
2. An individual contacted me during Earls first match and said, You don't Landon to play Earl! My response was-that's exactly who I want Landon to play because I knew Earl could not get through to Landon and would just shark himself. Landon commented before the match that he would win... no worry.
3. I have a match of Landon when he was 12 winning against Earl at Papa Murphy's in GA. Landon won 7-4 on 9 footers. It was a money match, too. Same comment before they played. I will win!

Golf is too uptight though. Tennis has got it just right. McEnroe was entertaining and not as psycho as earl. Idk how to explain it but there's a big difference between just plain unstable and a guy who gets worked up and doesn't hold back. Earl needs to go, but we need more McEnroes.

CTE works.

Or so they say.
I don't use it, just read and hear about it.
Would like to study it though.

that's awesome to know. Was exciting to see Landon take down Goliath.

As I remember it, McEnroe only got mad at the umpires and line callers, never his fellow competitors. I think Conners (almost as bad?) and the other players would have kicked his ass if he had acted like Earl and screaming at them across the net.

Got mad at himself a lot too.

That was Landon's first match on a ten footer. CTE made the table seem less intimidating. His mindset was good because of his alignment skills.

Do you have a ten footer at home? Looks like it on your videos.

I remember that match and was pulling for Landon. I don't use CTE but I've come to realize that if there's a secret to playing top level pool it's got to be in the way we align ourselves.

That's it in a nutshell Stan. A few gears ago I had to play a guy in the singles state tourney, we were already in the money, and my next match (the next morning) was already posted. It was against a very good player named Jimmy, more then a few here probably know who I'm talking about.

I didn't know him, I've heard of him, but I got a few phone calls the night before to let me know what he does, how he will get in your head, and when he's behind will "soft break" on you to screw with you and just playing safety after safety to wear you down.

Next day, I get there one hour early to practice on our assigned table. Of course, he gets there 5 mintues before we start and throws a couple of balls down the table and proclaims the rails are shit and wants to move. He knows both players have to agree to a table switch.

My first response was, Sure Jimmy, whatever you want. Normally, I would gotten a little pissed off for the move, and we would have stayed put, and I would have been riled up at least the first game, and probably lost.

I get up on him and as expected he moves to soft breaking, and starts playing safeties everywhere. I return the favor. He's not happy. He does it some more, and I finally say, I can do this all day too, I got nowhere to be ;) We're still in the winners bracket, so we're gonna be there for a long time (hopefully)

Now he's kinda pissed. Probably thinking I'm losing to a guy I never heard of ;)

I beat him 5-2, and he shakes my hand and says "yeah, i played like shit". I say no worries, so did I ;) I turned and walked away.

No hard feelings, a few years later, I teammate invited him to play on our State Team and I said sure, fine by me. I was not even sure he remembered our match or not. So, the first time he comes to practice with the team, I ask him, and he said, "yeah, I remember" and just smiles :)

Earl The Girl thinks very highly of himself.
He thinks the kid doesn't even deserve to be in the same room as he.
He's a pompous ***** through and through.
Has done nothing but bring bad name to our beloved game for his entire playing career.
Hopefully the likes of Boening, Ko Pin Yi, Pagulayan etc. will be able to fix some of the
damage to this game's reputation that The Whiny Girl has stained it with.

Meh..
I'd like you to try to explain how Earls *****ing and ranting has hurt the game more than the Challenge of Champions fixing scandal, of which he was NOT a part, which included most of the pro tour at the time and hall of famers. Instead people are kissing the asses of these rotten cheaters and letting Earl have it. They didn't include him, because they knew he'd never go along with it. That speaks to me. If there is one thing I can't stand, it's a cheater.

This thread is kind of sad. I mean, I get it, we all sometimes mentally masturbate about punching some guy, it's the natural consequence of having self control, but you can't find a better target than a guy with mental issues living hand to mouth? If Earl had been as sucessful as he was in any major sport, he would have been rolling in luxury at this time, and he would be pretty much immune to criticism. But since he plays pool he has to listen to crap from people who can't run 3 freakin' balls, what a joke! This doens't excuse his behavior in any way, but it does explain it somewhat. The rest can easily be explained by mental illness.

I totally get it, he acts like a jerk and his behavior is unacceptable. I think so too. But the proper response to this kind of behavior is administrative. Forfeit him from the tournament. Many bipolar people do not like taking their medication, but I wish Earl had done so at an earlier stage. Instead he keeps on digging himself into a hole from which he may never come out.

I member of my family once had a mental breakdown where she ran around insulting random people and saying outrageous stuff. Luckily people knew it was some kind of mental illness talking and merely talked back or ignored her, rather than physically attacking. I think that would be clear to most people, but apparently that is an actual thing to worry about, since a lot of you clearly do not understand that concept.

At one time (which was lenghty), Earl was the greatest 9 ball player in the world. As much as I love Reyes, I believe Strickland was in fact better, overall in 9 ball, especially in the offensive part of the game (no pun intended). Though naturally I'd never claim he kicked better! Strickland had a superior break, his jumping was unmatched and he made shots that were out of this world. He'd string racks like nothing. Every part of his game was strong, with no big weaknesses to speak of in his physical game, in 9 ball he was a more complete player than Reyes, even if Reyes was stronger in several areas, his break especially held him back from the insane rack stringing that Strickland was known for. In the Color of money challenge, it was Stricklands mental issues that did him in, after steamrolling Reyes for a long time.

Very thoughtful post and as OP, I need to once again type that I didn't suggest he needed to be "punched out", I was just wondering if anyone has done it. I further stated that as a dad to my 18 year old taking that kind of abuse, it would have been hard to sit still in the stands. The Shuffetts evidently knew what they were in for and used it to their advantage. Sure made me happy to see Earl get trounced.

Maybe Earl does have some mental issues...that stuff can make a person act haywire very quickly. I've seen it with relatives, it's just awful what it can do to a personality when it's triggered.
When discussions get around to fist fighting in major sports, I always think about Billy Martin when he played for the Yankees.
He would fight at the drop of a hat.
In fact, some of those bench clearing brawls in major league baseball make pool room scuffles look tame.

I will assume there are plenty of examples of Earl being Earl when he is winning handily. Since its a mental disorder and he can't help himself. I mean it's not like he only acts out when he is losing.

Although I think that if someone did punch Earl that might curtail some of his future "acting out", I agree with others that fighting is just not worth it -- as a really bad injury (or death) could result and end-up with the fighter having a very large expense and/or jail time.

I believe that Earl does indeed have some sort of mental or medical issue(s). I think that it was mentioned on this forum years ago that he was taking some kind of medication for it, but that he stopped taking it because he just couldn't perform as well when on the med.

LOL......I didn't say that Earl has hurt the game more than the "Challenge of Champions fixing scandal".
Matter of fact I never mentioned "Challenge of Champions fixing scandal" before.
