Has Europe Passed Asia at Pool?

As one who has long placed the Asian players on a pedestal, I never thought I’d ever have to consider this possibility, but I’m starting to believe that Europe has passed Asia as the best pool playing continent.

At the US Open 9-ball in September, the last four standing were Biado, Yapp, Oi and Orcullo, so Asia was the story there. At the International, Ouschan won the 9-ball over Orcullo in the final while Filler won the10-ball over Immonen in the final.

In 2022, it hasn’t gone well at all for Asia. At the Derby City 9-ball, the last five standing were Sanchez-Ruiz, Filler, Garcia, He and Shaw. At the Derby City 10-ball, the last four standing were Filler, Gorst, Immonen and Shaw. At the Arizona Open, the last four standing were Gorst, Garcia, Fortunski, and Sanchez- Ruiz. The last four standing at the Las Vegas Open were Yapp, Szewczyck, Zielinski, and Immonen. Finally, at the World 10-ball, the last four standing were Szewczyck, Tevez, Kaci and Shaw. Yes, Europe has been dominating the play in 2022 to this point.

Of course, COVID affected Asia more than Europe, so that’s an extenuating circumstance here. Similarly, the absence of Gorst and Orcullo from major tournament play of late obscures our sense of things. The Chinese players haven't returned yet. Perhaps a year from now, the Chinese, Taiwanese and Filipinos will all return to their peak form and Asians will reestablish their long-term designation as the best in the world.

All that said, I think I’m ready to proclaim, not without some reservations, that Europe is now the top pool playing continent in the world.

What’s your opinion?

Hard to tell with covid. I'm sure the Asians have been burnin' the midnite oil. Its just their nature. Europe is killing it for sure with the Poles leading the way. If $$ and visa issues were not there i think more young Filipinos would be on the world stage also.

The Polish players are impressive. I don't know anything about the pro environment there, but I think you or others have commented that it's a high profile sport with more media coverage than elsewhere in the world?

don't know about media coverage but they have a VERY organized nat. program. LOTS of rooms at decent prices based on what i've seen on here.

There's a lot more to the rise of pool in Europe than what's going on in Poland. Filler, Ouschan, Sanchez-Ruiz and Kaci have all taken their games to a higher level. Shaw remains very strong, and he even managed a 714-ball run at 14.1 this January. Kazakis, winner at the 2021 World Pool Masters and 2022 Wisconsin Open Champion, has shown great form of late. European 10-ball champion Pehlivanovic of Bosnia looks like a killer in the wings, too, and the youthful Hungarian Szolnocki won bronze at the last World Pool Championships. Europe is producing talent all over the place.

Yes, we may need to take a wait and see approach here, but I'm calling it as I see it right now.

I was talking to someone about this last night, who knows a lot about pool. More than most. I’ll leave it at that.

Our conclusion was that we are not sure yet because of travel restrictions. It appears Europe has in fact surpassed Asia presently, however Asia hasn’t had as many entrants the last couple years. So it’s not 100% clear who’s the dominate force.

Hopefully in a year or worst case 2 years we will be back to 100% unrestricted travel and get a solid answer. It may be close. Hard to say. I’d guess it’s a coin flip.

What is clear, sadly is America is in 3rd place. Lower if we used countries not regions. And that’s unlikely to change for a very long time. 😕 We just ain’t getting it done, period. And it’s not looking favorable as it’s been falling off for some time now.

I think people from american continent do not know much about europe´s billiard scene...

We play all table sizes and many different pool disciplines. If all the top players from all those disciplines dedicate themselves only to 9 ball or 10 ball on 9ft tables, fargo ratings would have 50 europeans to one from any other region.

What we see, now, is more and more players going out from local competitions to play and dedicate themselves to 9ft rotation games, that is the only difference to the past. And we have some legendary players who, sadly just don´t care about 9ball or 10ball...

having seen the pros up close in Vegas this week, the differences in the way the younger European competitors look, act, and play compared to the American players are not hard to discern. The comparison is not flattering.

Europe has lapped the field. The Asians are still super strong but alas with Covid we have some unknows. As it currently is the KO brothers plus a couple of 700+ Fargos would be favored against the US team.

Welcome! Where are you from and what local pool games do you play?

It depends on the country where you want to travel... starting at West, Portugal have 8 ball on 8ft tables 4" pockets. Next, Spain have a lot of 7ft and 9ft tables where to play. Oficial competition have 2 or 3 subdivisions on 8ball, 9 ball,10 ball, many many people playing there. France, Switzerland and Italy have their kind of tables to play a game that i do not recall the name. UK have 7ft, 8ft, 9ft, snooker and some other where they also play rotation and english 8 ball. Nord countries as Sweden or Finland have a kind of difficult game played on 9ft and 10ft tables with miserable small pockets.
Germany is probably where they play the most rotation pool.
