So much has been said about the many great players of our wonderful sport . Much praise and recognition have been given to guys like Reyes, Archer, Strickland etc . We all know who they are, we all know their life stories and we also know their indiviual road to fame and success; but in my opinion, theres not enough love shown towards the little guys . The guys that don't have their pictures on Billiard Digest or Pool & Billiards but they contributed to the success of a Gabe Owen or a John Schmidt .
And i'm not even talking about the backers, although i believe that they don't get their just due either . I'm talking about the really little guys . The guys that most people overlook but they are invaluable in what they do
here's to the guy that keeps the simonis on the designated "action table" gold crown clean and in great condition .
here's to the middle age league player that makes sacrifices/ puts up the money needed/ makes the arrangements/ to allow his team to have the time of their lives competing in vegas .
here's to the shade tree cue guy . you know the guy that all road players have on speed dial . the guy that has a lathe and he's always the cheaper cue repair alternative to a big name guy . this guy will open his door to a player at 3am if he needed a tip done, you know the guy .
here's to the house guy ( not the room player ) that never gets any credit in the pool room, he practically runs the pool room, he's not on the payroll perse' but whenever there is a problem he is the first person that is called . He knows where everything is, how everything works, he is handier than mr. goodwrench and he is only appreciated by the room owner ( who pays him under the table ) and he saves the room owner tons of money.
here's to the local steer, you know him, he knows how everyone plays and does'nt mind telling you how this guy played that guy and how so&so could give so&so the 7 ball, he is a wealth of information although sometimes he has a tendency to exaggerate . He can't play that well but he wished he was a player, you know the guy
here's to the barmaid that makes sure that she gives u a shiny and clean rack of centenials with a red circle or dot or whichever your preference, she knows that you like a little salt and lime with your corona and she also knows u love table 9 . She's not the prettiest or the most busty, but she is sweeter than honey, she laughs at your corny jokes, she listens intently when you tell her about your miserable day and she offers kind words to make you feel better, she gives you great advice on what to get your wife/girlfriend for her b-day/anniversary, she also gives you tips on how to get out of the dog house when you've messed up, you know her ...
here's to all of the hotel desk personnel that use to shoot a lil pool back in college and they still have a soft spot for pool players, they will immediately spot your cue case as you bring it to the desk wit the rest of your luggage and ask you what kind of cue you have and say something like "yeah, i had a four point mother of pearl meucci original with a blue dot shaft, they only made 50 of it's kind . yeah, those were the days" you know the guy, they'll talk about the trick shot match that was on espn a few nights ago "i never could get that masse' down pat. that mike massey is somethin' else huh?" on espn and you're just smiling and nodding your head because you know he's gonna give you a kin folk deal and he usually does...
So hats off to all of the over looked, under appreciated, under valued little guys ( and girls of course ) we love you ..
