Have I come across the ultimate nit?

I would not have gone quietly. Taking sticks and stones to it's outer limit.

Just because you can call something doesn't mean you should. I despise these hall monitor personality types.

Probably to the point where I would never be allowed to play there again.

So what?
I thought about it. Trust me 🤣

Saving/keeping face is such an interesting concept and very strange to us westerners.
I was told that however bad you feel embarrassing yourself, it is much worse to embarrass another.
Fair assessment?
What's also interesting to me, is our own subjective assessment and processing of these emotions; embarrassment, shame, pride

All of these things are technically the same, yet worlds away from how we process and interact with them in our lives.

To embarrass someone here is not really taken lightly in an open social setting. It's not 'banter' or a bit of fun. It's quite personal. The processing of embarrassment is also not as light as we are maybe accustomed to. It can invoke very deep, shameful feeling.

Could that guy have been asserting dominance?
Laying groundwork for future interactions?
He's not someone I have seen regularly at any tournament, in my local hall, or the other halls I occasionally go to and play. I don't think it was a dominance thing (although there was some element of an obliged herd mentality against an outsider regarding the approach taken to resolution - as so often happens to impact foreigners negatively in any country). It was either confusion, or straight up nit behavior. The resolution involved a room full of people, and logic was not defeating face in that scenario.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think it's acceptable to do anything but sit and watch when the opponent is at the table. I get annoyed with people looking at their phone. I don't think I did anything wrong, but still, will have to learn to think like a nit. Be a bit proactive.
A teammate after he broke on the hill dry decided to break down his break cue since he wasnt going to break again. I backed his reasoning to the ref, but also told him that breaking down his equipment while the other guy is shooting is just bad form. The ref let it go with a warning.

No time to read just give me the jist of it

Can see why he would do that. But I understand why it's frowned upon. He could wait til the rack is over. Good sportsmanship from the opponent and referee.

problem is if the ref. doesn't enforce a rule he is clearly favoring one of the players. and that's bad on him.

tournaments are a game of rules and regulations. if you violate one and the penalty for it is clear you have to live with it.

if some rules are optional and the opponent cant call them then they are not rules at all. breaking your cue while the opponent is at the table is clearly ruled a concession. maybe a stupid rule but a rule none the less.

But the opponent wasn't at the table. I won/finished the rack, then proceeded to go and attempt a shaft change.
I don't think breaking the cue while the opponent at the table is a silly rule. But I do think not being able to break the cue outside of a rack is nonsense. I think Bob cleared up earlier in the thread that it should not be ruled a concession. I can do what I like in-between racks. But I totally understand why this situation unfolded the way it did. Complicated social logistics, along with a combination of a nit that leveraged that and confusion when the hand was offered (I thought he was conceding to me)

you won't do it again. case closed. move on. must have 'NitDar' on at all times. ;)

yes if between racks you got screwed buddy.

but you got to read the rules for that tournament and follow them exactly. and also use them to your full advantage even if the loser calls you a nit or whatever. your job is to defeat him and not give him any breaks.

Ditto:

The first time I attended the barbox in Reno was also the first time I had ever played a pro in a match.

Alternating break race to 7 ten ball and I'm nervous as hell. The well known pro I'm playing is 20-25 years my junior. Every time I'm at the table he's on his phone. I make a bunch of mistakes and before you know it the score is 5 zip. At this point I'm pissed at his lack of respect for me and the game itself and I for some reason relax and break and run. He breaks dry and I run out again. I break and run a second time.

Now the score is 5-3 and guess what? He puts his phone away in his case and I don't see it again. He wins the next two games and the match. Then he shakes my hand and gives me a compliment.

"I like your case"

Some times that sense of hopelessness allows us to play a bit more freely. Bet it took a little willpower not to give him a little slap 🤣 What case do you have? Who were you playing?

I've found It's usually the intermediate/advanced amateurs here that seem to spend their lives on their phones. They often are the ones with a sour attitude, or general ignorance to etiquette (whether this is sharking, or general ignorance I can't quite decide)

I've quite enjoyed my times where I've played against pros here. Played a few domestic and international pros, and they have always been positive experiences (5 Mainlander, 1 Taiwanese and 3 foreign in my year of playing competitively). The attitude is almost like playing a teacher or a coach. Enthusiastic observation and general encouragement, or simply appreciation of shots. Both in verbal exclamation and gesturing. I like to think they understand how intimidating it can be and try to nullify any kind of tense atmosphere - It might also be because I come across as a total fanboy to anyone whose name I recognize lol (Or maybe their jovial attitude is that they're not taking it so seriously?)

Either way, most have seemed happy to talk through situations that arose after the game, I've picked up a couple of wins and I've enjoyed and learned from every such experience so far.

Maybe there is some cultural difference in attitude here toward playing at the highest level?

Savannah Easton playing Tony Chohan banks this past week. Chohan was scrolling on his phone from start to finish, sometimes in her line-of-sight.

The crappiest thing was he wouldn't even take his made balls out of the ball return and place them in the metal rack on his side of the table. She took his balls out of the return for him and put them where they were supposed to be. What a douchebag!

Disrespect/head games. I got a bit of a love/hate relationship with watching Chohan play.

It's a JB ultra rugged back when they first came out. Still have it and it's still a damned good case.

I'm not here in the nit thread to be nitty about some game a decade ago and name the player. I just like telling the story. My goal at first was to win. Ok that goal left me. Then to make a ball. Then to win a game and finally to make him put the f'ing phone away. I achieved most of my goals(y)

Looked into getting one, but could only find overpriced second hand ones on Xianyu. Ended up getting a 3seconds case which I am super happy with
