If you guys want to see a very well made video about pool... follow the link below.

Good-Bye Johnny

It's better in many respects then many of this awful pool movies discussed here. This was made in the 50's for television. I believe Fred Whalen was shooting many of the shots. He did most of the Hollywood stuff back then. It looks like his elegant bridge also. Fred was a fine player, and many time California Straight Pool Champion. Notice that the final shot on the eight ball was a wired combination. Obviously set up for Robertson, so "he" could really make the last ball.

Thanks for sharing this important piece of pool history.

Beats me if Mars can actually play any. Never seen him except in the movie.

I played next to him for a few hours one night at Hollywood. He can't play much. Those who know him there say he "likes to think he used to be a hustler". From what I saw that's wishful thinking.

As for the movie, the plot sucked, the acting sucked (except Chris Walken), Mars sucked, Little Ricky Schroeder sucked, the wordgame hustle sucked, the whole thing sucked.

Did I mention it sucked?

Mars can't shoot. Or at least not nearly as well as he'd like to (or claims). He'd be a C- player on his very best day.

I liked the movie for the most part. Two things I didn't like about the end: One was when he asked the old guy what he would do, and the guy told him. That would NEVER be allowed in a money game; Two, after he banks the last ball in the big money game, you can see the cue ball and the 9 ball would never have come back together the way they did. Yeah, I know its a movie, but most people that will watch this movie are shooters, and we know.

Everytime I go into a poolhall and I hear someone ask the question, "have you ever watched the movie 'Poolhall Junkies'?"...I feel like kicking them in the sack. Does this make me a bad person?
It would be better to ask them the capital of Thailand and when they say "I don't know" you say Bangkok and hit em in the nuts. JMO. :D:D I bet they never ask you if you have seen the movie again. On second thought they will probably never talk to you again. Either way it is a win win.

At least Mars is capable of looking like a pool player, something most actors cannot do. In fact what actor ever really looked like he could play? I can name one, Jackie Gleason.

Can't Newman really play? Or is that just a wives tale?

He can't play his way out of a paper bag. Cruise picked up the game fast (he's a jock), and was a decent C+ player in six months. Good coaching from Herb Lehmann and then Sigel helped.

If they did...it would be at a much higher pitch...

#1 The Hustler. Without a doubt. Not only was it entertaining, but also contributed so much to the sport itself, gave it yet another leg to stand on!

#2 TCOM. (Wish Gleason would have made an apperence.)

#3 The Baron and the Kid. Entertaining.

#4 PHJ. Entertaining! yeah there are some cheesy parts, but I own it and still watch it.

#5 Shooting Gallery. Could have done a lot better, but still entertaining.

Non-Rated:
Kiss Shot - (havent seen yet)
Chalk - (havent seen yet)

Overrated:
Kisses and Caroms - sucked. needs more Pool to even allow the name to stay.

Up-against the 8 - sucked. wouldnt recommend or own this to anyone, even people I dislike.

Stickmen - sucked.

and that about covers that. :D

I really enjoyed PHJ. The pool shooting sequences could have been better no doubt about that. I enjoyed the rest of the movie. I liked the interplay between the young guys. They really cracked me up with some of their talk! I thought the opening scenes were pretty good in the all black pool hall too. You could tell that Mars had a lot of game off the table which is a hell of an asset to have if you're going to be a road player.

Poolhall Junkies

Not the worst I've ever seen, but I tuned out after about a half-hour. The Hollywood people live in their own world, and I'm not interested.

Well, for the record, not ONE actor in that movie (including Mars) could pass for a professional pool player.

That's why they're called "actors" :D

I used to know one of the guys in that film - the guy who played the rich preppy kid character. Went to college with some pals of mine. Guy ended up in that movie "Crossroads" with Britney Spears - betcha he's loving THAT these days. :/

Yes

Yes, I watched it in pieces, WAY before it was completed.

The broken arm thing was a take on the broken thumbs thing.

The "fondle the boobs" piece in the credits, to see if they were real to settle a bet, was from the Baltimore Bullet.

Instead of a black shirt with white letters with VINCE, it was HUSTLER.

One trick shot, SET UP AGAIN, that came up in an earlier game, for the BIG take (all the marbles as he says)

I don't want to be a hustler, sound familiar?

They are playing for $1000 a set, and the pro gets sent to the ATM 3 times? (do daily ATM withdraws allow $3000 or more?

BUT, I enjoyed it when I first saw it. Hell, there was pool in it, and we should be thankful that folks make movies like that, even if there are some scenes that are stretched from reality.

I pop in the VCR when I'm doing other stuff now and then...
