Have you ever watched the movie "Poolhall Junkies"?

What we needs is a pool movie, made by Players for Players! Quick someone round up people to invest!!! :D

I'm thinking one handpicked from the WPBA, an outdoor tournament, and a swimming pool would make a great start!

Kiss Shot with Whoopi Goldberg wasn't too bad if I recall right. It's been a few years since I've seen it though. Jerry Briesath coached Whoopi for that film.

ScottW...Yeah, well usually GOOD actors try very hard to LOOK the part!  Not so in PHJ! They could have been 'taught' or coached, to the point where they would have at least been credible on screen.

That's why they're called "actors" :D

I used to know one of the guys in that film - the guy who played the rich preppy kid character. Went to college with some pals of mine. Guy ended up in that movie "Crossroads" with Britney Spears - betcha he's loving THAT these days. :/

Just finished watching it. I found it entertaining and I've never seen a hustle before so was interesting to see...I would get broke quick if I was a gambler.

Light entertainment using pool as it's medium...I mean really if you want to watch good pool just PVR TSN billiards or buy a real match they all have a real billiard story.

Thanks for the comments made by others, to be fair maybe by having low expectations I was able to enjoy it.

If you guys want to see a very well made video about pool... follow the link below.

Good-Bye Johnny

That was a quality piece of storytelling, Thanks I really appreciate you sharing that link. I think that is one of the Gems that that makes reading this forum worth reading.

This is the movie that influenced me along with a lot of people around here to go to the pool hall. As such, I can forgive the problems the movie has due to nostalgia.

I still think the movie is fun. I don't really care that none of the players look like they can play.

With that said, I was speaking to a guy from our local billiard supply store and he told me that there was a noticable jump in his sales that coincided with the release of the movie. I used to always see people trying that 8 ball shot that Christoper Walken made.

Regardless of its faults it made pool seem cool to many ball bangers, and that can only be a good thing.

Behind the 9 is available for free to anyone who wants to sign up for a free lycos cinema account. Its like a hour and some odd minutes long. I highly recommend you never watch this movie. Worst pool movie EVER.

PHJ was entertaining to people who aren't pool fanatics. I just want the SW cue he used at the end. ;)

You know Freddy The Beard has a script in the works about a hustler. I don't know where he is at with it. If you go to his website I think he has some links to the script.

PHJ is not my favorite by far (The Hustler and COM are much better as everyone else says) but I thought its worth watching. There are cheesy shots and cheesy parts in the movie but I could put up with that.

I'm waiting for Turn the River to come out video rental.(7/24/08 i think) I have a hunch it won't be a bad movie for pool players, card players, and gamblers in general. Johnnyt

At least Mars is capable of looking like a pool player, something most actors cannot do. In fact what actor ever really looked like he could play? I can name one, Jackie Gleason.
Jerry Orbach. Paul Sorvino. Just to name two. Funny that both guys are very good pool players, and also appeared on Law and Order.

I liked PHJ
It wasnt the best pool movie of all time of course, but far from the worst.

I got kiss shot for christmas and havenet been able to force myself to watch it yet. come on, whoopi as a hustler? And if i ever buy behind the 8 ball itll just be for collecting i dont think i could ever watch it.

baron and the kid wasnt that bad

.....baron and the kid wasnt that bad

Had the misfortune of seeing Baron and The Kid again two days ago on a stale movie channel. Had forgotten just how absolutely appalling it was. It made the cringe-inducing COM look like an epic movie and that's not easy:smile:

What folks want is a good movie, period.

The Hustler had pool in it, but was it really about "Pool"

Pool Hall Junkies was about tricking people with words.

Both the Hustler and the Color of Money were about people using pool to trick other people.

Okay, so where are we now?

I thought Mars already did that! I remember seeing (Dvd extras I think) Mars talking about this very thing. He talked about past pool movies and how some of the actors didn't play the part well and didn't look like they could play. I am so glad he came to the rescue and gave the part of the professional pool player to Rick S. and had him shooting with a Cuetec or something similar.
And to those that think PHJ is the worst pool movie ever, couldn't possibly have seen all of them. It may not be a masterpiece by any means, but some of the other pool movies are down right pathetic.

Everytime I go into a poolhall and I hear someone ask the question, "have you ever watched the movie 'Poolhall Junkies'?"...I feel like kicking them in the sack. Does this make me a bad person?

I find that a lot of non-diehards actually liked the movie. I have stopped telling people that it's a crappy movie, it's just not worth it.

In my mind anything that gets people to the table and playing is a good thing for the growth of our sport.

Even if it's as distasteful as Pool Hall Junkies/Shooting Gallery and 7-Ball.

:-)

There has been exactly ONE good movie about pool. THE HUSTLER! And that's it so far.
