Im planning a trip to Oahu. Whats the lowdown on where to play in Oahu? Any weekly tournaments?

Hawaiian Brians is a great room. That's prob the only place to play in Oahu.

There are three pool halls that I know of on Oahu: Hawaiian Brian's, Aiea Cue, and the Velvet Touch.

Of the three, I have been to Brian's and Aiea Cue. Brian's is BY FAR the BEST, with the Velvet Touch coming in second. Aiea Cue is a dive and the clientele isn't the type I'd want to mingle with. I've heard that the Velvet Touch is pretty good, but I can't confirm that.

I think they still have a weekly tournament at Brian's, but I haven't played in one for almost 20 years. If you want "action", you can usually find someone to accommodate you (depends upon the time of the day).

If you are 55 or older, you can play from 10 A.M. till 2 P.M., daily, for $5 for the four hours. If you play outside those times up until 8 P.M., you will get a 50% discount off the hourly rate which is $5-something an hour. After 8 P.M. there is no discount. If you are not 55, you will pay the regular hourly rates.

The Pro Shop is very limited in supplies and isn't open but a few hours each day. Depending upon who is working, you can get minor cue work done, like tip replacement, shaft cleaning, etc.

Unless you park on the street (limited), you will have to pay for parking. If you bring your ticket inside and spend a minimum of $5, they will validate your ticket and you will only have to pay $1.25 for parking, no matter how long you have stayed inside. If you lose your ticket you will be charged a minimum of $20 at the parking booth when you try to exit. If your ticket isn't validated, you will be charged an hourly rate which is way more than what you would have paid if you got validated.

I think all the tables are 9' Gold Crowns and they range from what I would consider "fair" to "good" condition. Some are ball return tables and some are not. I think there is a different hourly rate between the two types.

If you are going to gamble, make SURE you set the ground (no pun intended) rules before you start. Without exception, I've never seen a money match without the "local" players insisting on being able to climb on top of the tables to reach a shot. I've seen people literally sitting in the middle of the tables between the pockets to shoot a shot.

Aloha and welcome to Hawaii. :)

In edit: Here is Hawaiian Brian's website. http://hawaiianbrians.com/

I looked at the calendar and don't see the weekly pool tournaments listed anymore.

thx for the insider info, esp on the parking and the get on the tables part. Good to know.

i called hawaiian brians last night and they told me that they no longer do tournaments. The guy there said he didnt know of any tournaments in hawaii.

Is pool dead in hawaii?

Aloha,

For the most part yes. Very little action. There is another place called Mcully cue and has GC 3 as well. Over all table conditions on Oahu is poor to fair. The best playing GC 9' I've come accross on Island is at Velvet touch, as I would rate it at 7.5/10. Brian's has a couple of fair tables at best and even they play inconsistant.
