HELP: Advice Needed for Cleaning-Up Old Cue

OK... I feel SORRY for you and your team ...

lol. Yes it's not always easy.

Ok here's the deal. I was going to work on getting that wrap cleaned up this evening but I'm going to the casino instead. If I come out $200 ahead, I'm sending it off.

You'll know I didn't win if I'm back posting picks of my progress and asking for advice...

Thanks...

Well I'm back from the casino and happy to report it went better than planned.

The accountant in me couldn't justify spending more to fix up a cue than it's likely worth, regardless of it's cool nostalgic factor. That said, it was going to get done one way or another, whether I did it or not.

Now it's time to get busy on having it done. First, is to check with Schmelke and see if they made it. If so, it's probably worth a little more than I thought, but more importantly, I'll be leaning toward them to do the refurbishing...

I'll post back here who I go with, and how it turns out. Some before and after pics should be cool...

I'm currently without an avatar until it's finished.

This is what a $100 buy-in at blackjack grossed tonight...

So, you doubled your buy-in? That's great!!!

(Assuming on the doubling, because zero information given on how well it actually went at the casino. Lotta people don't know poker chip color schemes and values by heart... :-) )

Hmmm... I suspect you do though  lol But for the chip value impaired, black is $100, green $25, then $5.

I actually blew $50 of the winnings on the evening bingo session before that pic. A good night!:cool::smile2:

new shaft, new brass joint with 5/16 14 thread screw. and let the maker refinish but leave the wrap untouched, its great.

spend a few bucks or you will be sorry later after you ruin it.

Agree 100% on keeping the wrap. Thanks for that

I dunno... I never went much for super "old-school" looking cues, so I would probably have ended up replacing the wrap, but that's just me...

Without that wrap it loses 75% of it's charm, IMO.

I hear ya though. Aesthetically speaking, it wouldn't be my first choice on an everyday user.

On it's way...

A quick update.

This cue is on it's way to Proficient Billiards. The great reviews on their website sucked me in (in addition to all the recommendations here). Matt is the person I've been speaking with. He said the turn-around time is 10-14 days.

They will be removing the joint from the old shaft and transplanting onto a shaft they are making. I'm doing this for the sake of "originality." My concerns about the original joint are minimal, as this cue came from an environment that was probably somewhat "abusive" at times (parties, drinking, stragglers, fighting, don't give AF attitudes, etc), and has managed to remain completely sound 60-70 years later.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the outcome! If anyone with picture-mending skills is willing to help out with some BEFORE & AFTER shots, please let me know. Thanks!
