I dont know if many of u know, I have gone thru a lot of medical problems over the last 4 years and 1 year ago, I finally gave up my right leg, to hopefully get rid of 8 different infections that I got from a total hip replacement i had gone thru. So, about 8 months ago, I couldnt play pool anymore, but I wanted to stay invloved in the world of pool and such.

So, I had all of my collection of pool items, cues, cases, books, dvds, etc. shipped to me in Largo, Florida and I rented a very small space 10 feet from the front door of The Crooke Cue pool hall, which is where they just had the 2012 US Amateur Championships for the women, and I set up a Billiards Pro-Shop with a whopping, 84 square feet of space, It took me almost 3 months to get the shop up and running because I didnt have the mopney to pay others to build the are and put in counters, shelves, etc. So, I finally got the area up and running and I just found out that the person I am renting from, never pulled Business and Occupancy permits for the building i am in, so I now have to find another place to run my businessm which included,

200 pool cues, 90% were vintage and cues I had collected over 30 years,
60 cue cases, also a lot of vintage cases collected since 1985
200 books of pool, 3-cushion, snooker etc.
300 DVD
1000's of tips 130 different types all the way back to vintage 1970's tips

And so on and so on

What should I do??

If I just sell everything, how whould I go about doing this,
If I find another place, I have no way of transferring everythign and re-setting up my shop and I have very little cash, since I have invested everything I have in this little shop.

I am on disability and I thought this was something I could do if only a few hours a day and be able to not be dependent on the government and tax-payers to make a living.

What should I do, I am inbetween a rock and a hard place.

Any advice would be very appreciated!!!

If you can do repairs, maybe you can find a pool hall to put you a shop in. Maybe trade work for rent? Sounds like a rough situation. Maybe pray on it

Find local bars willing to put in your cue display cases and allow them to sell the cue for a small cut of the action and you can have drop spots at each bar a place where people can drop off their shafts and rubberband a postit to it saying what tip, cleaning whatever sevices they want. Have stanardized prices at each bar so you can post a menu on the wall of what each service costs. You can get budweiser to do it for free and make a nice sign if the bar asks them for it. Then just do all the work from home.

Has anyone else put there shop in a Pool Hall, what is the accepted agreement?

I kept my place I have so small because I was paying only, $125.00 a month in rent. I dont want or have a lot of money to pay each month and I can only work a few hours a day due to my health situation.

Has anyone done a fee for in-house work, or % of service jobs done or is it better to just have a set monthly rent amount?

I have what I think would be an asset to any pool hall, the amount of inventory and items I offer and learning books and dvds are all assets I think any pool hall would love to have in there establishment. Does anyone think differently?

The pool hall I am next to, I approached 6 months ago when I was thinking about setting up a pro-shop. I approached the owners and the first thing they said to me was, We have someone already who does all of our cue work, so i ended up putting my pro shop 10 feet from there front door. I play for the pool hall and I even have a good relationship with the guy who does the work for the Pool Hall.

What I think is a am really not competing with the other cue guy, I do do tips and ferrules and cleanings, but thats it, anything else, I offer to send off to the other cue guy and a lot of what I offer in the way of all the cues cases and accessories, the cue guy doesnt even offer. Plus, I offer a 1 hour turnaround time and most people that want a tip re-done or ferrule of cleaning dont want to loose there cue for 3 to 5 days, which is how long it takes the current guy to get them done, because he is not in-house, he has to take the work to his workshop across town.

What do you think and what is the best approach, any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mike, I don't understand how they do things in Florida, however, every where I know of when some one opens a business, ( The Business Owner )they first have to get a Federal Tax ID Number, and after that they have to get a Business Permit from the local Government / City.

Thats what I had to do, but like I said I don't know anything about how they handle these matters in Florida, but I suspect those permits are your responsibility.

I did buy a Business license and have a Tax Id and EIN N

number. What happened is that the person I am reting my space for in the building I am in, did not get the permits for his business and did not get the Occupancy Permit.

So the code enforcement people came buy and cited the person I am renting from for not having the permits.

Just because I have a business license and a permit, that has nothing to do with an occupancy permit on the building I am renting from. this is the landlords responsibility to make sure the building is up to code and can be used for retail businesses.

This is the problem, I cant afford to rent the whole building, so I had to rent from a landlaord that had control of the whole building. I was just renting a very small area, this building is set up like a flea market.

Thats the deal.

If you want to totally sell out set up a thread in the wanted and for sale section with lots of pictures and details. If you want to set up another location look for a quality pool room to set up in. Offer them a commission on sales and maybe get one more trusted person that works there to have the key while you are gone. And I say again "One trusted person" not two or three or four. That way you know who went in there and there won't be the blame game going on if something is missing.

As far as the inventory goes, there is no rental or taxes charged in the Wanted/For Sale section here on AZ, so that would probably maximize your return on some of the items that you have on hand today.

work shop

hi mike sounds like you should apply for ss disabilitie if you can only work a few hrs you can get ss d and still work im on ssd i know a guy who is on ssd and has a bike repair shop and they gave him cash to start it he was in a serious accident and barly could walk .ive had 3 back opps and heart attack gett ssi its not alot but its helps

Is any of you AZBers living near Mike...? If I lived near him I would have helped his with transport. Would people living near Mike be able to help him with Transport?

I saw D9075's listing and I have just made an appt.

Thru the Vocational Rehabilitation department, to see if I might be eligible for some type of grant or loan to be able to set up my shop where I , wouldnt have to worry about issues like this. I own all of my inventory, so, other than the medical bills I still have outstanding, atleast i dont owe anybody in the business venture side.

I go to the appointment on May 1st and then they will assign a counselor to me and hopefully they will give me some ideas.

Thanks for any other ideas you might have or come up with.
