Help ID this 70's cue, looks good!

I picked this cue up out of Texas, but that does not mean it was made there.

craig had a dealer in both texas and LA by the late 80's, but i don't know how far back .

Joint collar, pin, and insert is not typical of most Petersens you see, but like I said above, his early stuff is next to impossible to be certain on. Just ask Milt. ...

you can't rule out craig by what parts were used. craig flew off the cuff, and had many different parts in his shop....pure mix and match. you know from our past emails that i would never throw craig's name around:) . i respect his name too much.

i found five, possibly six tells. there may be cuemakers who did some of the things craig did,,,,but not as many as 5 or 6 tells, imo. otoh,,,there are two things that bother me,,,but this is an old cue. if all the prongs are this good, this cuemaker knew his sh!t. left to his own devices, craig was partial to tapered shafts because he played billiards(he called them "modified european taper"), though i wouldn't use that as a criteria,,,shafts come with customers' wishes. could be the customer bought an original, didn't like the taper, and had a second made elsewhere. the tapered shaft, if original, should be a great piece of wood.

maybe the easiest thing to do is what is already being done...... people are starting to conclude who DIDN'T do this cue.

I have a '78 Stroud that respectfully begs to differ with you.

and i've seen a ton of old strouds(they're everywhere) that are sloppy.:)

Tad had nice points

tad's veneers aren't this clean......even today. also, somebody can correct me, but these prongs look spliced, yes? i THINK tad inlays his prongs. victor stein said he was at tad's shop when he did the first bluebook, and saw all the routed cuts in the nose.

can you email me the other prongs? .......i think i could be right about this being a peterson.

some of the cuemakers you mention might be rather easy to verify. just get a bunch(as in more than only one) of their 70's cues, and check to see if they did veneers as clean as this cue.

Hmmm... I've never owned a Tad, but Chalkers.com sold an early 80's Tad that had this forearm... nice, clean points that looks spliced... but the joint on this one was a 5/16-18... so...

So let's trash the man's work because you've only seen shitty ones.

This is not the thread for it, but I'm tired of Bill not geting his due.

i own a great stroud and you've seen it. http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=16544&highlight=joss+west

but this thread is about narrowing tulip's choices, and seamless veneers isn't the only criteria i'm using, scott. it's not enough to say it's not a jw or tad without giving my reason why.

not Joss

Not a Joss pin is wrong. I have a set of twins one with straight Joss and one with slanted Joss almost identical to your cue but the pin is different has a bit of a nipple on the end as does my 80's Jw.

Price has been decided on the great unknown

I've decided to sell the unknown cue we've been guessing about for $800. Most of the cue makers I tried contacting have failed to respond. Except for Richard Black, he said it probably was not his cue.

With a brown rubber bumper, Burton Spain blank and Cortland linen I am surprised no one seriously mentioned Balabushka as a possibility.

This cue looks a lot like a McDaniel I owned about 25 years ago. Different color veneers but very similar. Nice cue. Is it still for sale?
Regards, Roger

Wrong color sequence for Burton Spain during the Balabushka years. At least I haven't seen the red and green reversed.

IMHO the BUSHKA spin is very wishfull thinking.

In addition Mcdaniel made as many, if not more, BUSHKA'a as GEORGE did.

I saw hundreds of brown bumpers in his shop during the time frame that this Q was probably made.

I still think the Q has to be in hand for someone to determine who the probable maker was.

Based on feedback left by buyer and seller it appears everyone is pleased....thats all that matters:)
