Help ID this table, please!

Hello all.

I was thinking of buying this table. I think I know what it is, a Gold Crown III (IV?), but I wanted to run it by the experts before buying it.

So.....what kind of table is this? How much should I offer for it?

Looks like a 3 to me. But the 3's I've seen have bronze by the pockets. If you look under the table it'll tell you. Only difference I see. But I'm no expert ;)
 
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a GCIII in pretty good condition. Assuming it's in good shape with intact slate, would $700 be a good deal?

I've been reading on here that most seem to prefer the GCI/IIs, even though they have brunstone as opposed to slate. Not sure why that is. Something with the bumpers?
 
In my experience I've played only on a gc1 and the 3's. the 1 rolled better, and the 3's rails were junk. So I'm probably not a great source. If you could scoop It up in the 500-700 dollar price range and do some rail work I'd bet it would play great.
 
Hmm...I'm not exactly a professional...but I really couldn't tell anything off with the rails...

Maybe I can snake it for $500 and "diamondize" it later...

Any tablemechanics with 2 cents?

Where's that realkingcobra guy? I've been learning LOTS from him the past few weeks.

Looks like it has the GCIII bronze trim on the rail edges and ball box, but chrome corners? Maybe the corners were swapped out? I'd guess it's a III. Definately not a II. You can have the cushions swapped out very affordably. Just put the Diamond blacks on my GC1 and love how they play.

I'd say it's worth $600-$900 if it has not been abused and looks good in person. You won't know the condition of the slate until the cloth is removed. Look at the condition of the pockets too. I'd say $700 is fair. I think I saw that one on Craigslist a couple months ago when I was looking for one.

How does it play now? If it plays good and you can get it for a good price than do it. I picked up an 8' GCII for a couple hundred, and then had my rails redone by Donny from SD Billiards. Had Artemis cushions installed and I couldn't be happier with the way it plays. There are two guys on here that can do the rails and they will play better than any gold crown you have ever played on before.

Where you located? That will help in mechanic recommendations.

I've owned and played on quite a few GCs over the years.

IMHO - it is almost certainly not a GC3.

Most likely choices:

1. A "late" GC2 - they made some with the 'factory' brown stain but the
silver feet and castings.

2. A "stained" pre-3. In the 80s there were lots of GC1s & GC2s that
got re-worked and stained to look like a GC3.

In your pic, to me, the aprons look much darker than the legs(pedestals).
That would argue for a re-worked version.

FWIW - I prefer the GC2 - there were issues with the glue Bruns used
for the cushions on GC1s, I never saw one that didn't have dead spots
where the gluebond had failed.

As for the GC3, well...

....so I got a "pre 3"...Strange. I've never heard of that. I'm going to try to get it. I'm in Detroit, MI, btw.
 
I have a GC that has a GC3 feet and ball box, with GC2 slate and rails.

Mine did not come from the factory like this.

I suspect the table in question is parted out, from a combo of GC3 and GC2's parts.

The only way to be sure is to inspect it carefully, when disassembled.
 
Which GC

If the aprons attach to the rails with a j-clip, it is a I or II. GC III aprons bolt to the underside of the rails. The bolts are easily visible from underneath the table. If it has large counters, it is a I or II. Small counters mean III or later.
(Stand at the foot of the table, and look at the counters....large counters have approx 5/8 inch of formica showing between the counter and the rail edge trim...small counters show 1 1/8 inch of formica)
