hey all-

I've been looking at cues lately and have basically narrowed my decision down to three choices.

1) Scorpion SCORP32 Black Leather Wrap- 18 ounce, - http://www.pooldawg.com/product/scorpion-scorp32-black-leather-wrap-pool-cue-stick

2) Scorpion AR04-Johnny Archer 18 ounce, -

3) McDermott C157 Alpha Plus Nighthawk Black- 18 ounce - http://www.pooldawg.com/product/mcdermott-c157-alpha-plus-nighthawk-black-pool-cue-stick

4) Also perhaps this... An all graphite... whats your opinion on graphite sticks? http://www.pooldawg.com/product/scorpion-graphite-solid-black-pool-cue-stick

Tips: Sniper http://www.pooldawg.com/product/tiger-sniper-pool-cue-tip-single

Tip Tool: http://www.pooldawg.com/product/willard-scuffer-pros-nickel-

I have a question on tools and tip maintenance... do i need to clean it out periodically to let the chalk stay on nicely? Something like a pick tool?

any recommendations on which one? Right now I'm leaning towards the SCORP32... but any other recommendations are welcome...

Even completely different cue recommendations.. but my price range is right around 150-160.

Thanks

I have a Cuetec with the fiberglass coated shaft and i hate it. It is very hard to keep the shaft slick, it is always sticky. That why i am looking to get an all wood stick.

From those 3 deffinatly go with the McDermott, I have a Cuetec and hate the firbreglass shaft too, I now use a McDermott for my main shooting cue and love it.

Does anybody know if you can just sand the fiberglass off a Cuetec shaft and just play on ?

While I don't know for sure.... I'm going to guess that while you could.. It may not yield good results. you would probably have to do it perfectly as well as refinish the wood...

IMHO probably not worth it... but who knows.

I think I like the McDermott now... but any other cue suggestions?

Also do I need a tip pick?

ok...

I think I'm going to go with the mcdermott... seems like a nice solid cue that should serve me well...

oh cool... I'll look into that.

Won't have money for a cue for a couple weeks though.

Would you recommend having a professional do the tip for me? I don't have a cutter or anything so it may just be worth it....

If your going with the Mcdermott I would stick with the stock Triangle tip that comes on it rather then change it out, the Triangle is a great tip imo.

I too would go with the Mcdermott but have you looked at Lucasi also an excellent cue in that price range. A simple tip tool will do the job as far as shaping and scuffing. Also if you choose to change the tip have a pro do it.

Go with the McDermott. Leave tip alone, they are great out of box, and when you decide to sell it you have something to sell . Jim

+1 for the McDs. I had a cuetec fibreglass cue. Absolutely hated it. Looked good, played lousy. Even my $50 bucks China cue played better than the cuetec.

You mean sand it down to wood? You won't have much of a shaft left. If you mean sand it down to get it a little slick, then by all means it works..... for a short while. What i used to do was get Pledge to slick it. Works for an hour or so before i need another wipe. Gives my hands a little of a slicky feeling as well.. which i didn't really like.. but didn't have much of a choice. All the best with your cuetec!

Amen Brother, it is great to hear an honest appraisal of cues with a Fiberglass coated shaft, but if I were you I would hide for awhile, Travis Trotter may send a Hit Man after you!!!!!!

hands down buy the mcdermott. they have a great warranty. i bought the gf a scorpion and it warped in less than a year....shaft and butt both. she wanted it so i bit my tongue and got her it. she got rid of it and got a mcdermott. you wont be disappointed with the mcdermott.

Talk to Rackem. He has these radial pin imports he sells for $100. They are great cues. I bought one and you can't beat them for the money. They play great.

I agree, stay away from Cuetec and the Scorpion. The fiberglass shafts require a glove. I used some 1000 grit sand paper on my Scorpion but I am not convinced it did much good. I still use it to break because it has a hard water buffalo tip and it can function as a spare cue should my main player get damaged.

yea I'm talking to rackem...

question: Nickel or dime tip? Which one is better for playing? I've seen somewhere that nickel is slightly better...

Also do I need a tip pick?

As others have mentioned, I would also go with the McDermott and stick with the Triangle tip. We have the C157 available for $127.20 also at www.FineCue.com.

Thanks,

Randy
