Help Me Pick out a Jump Break Cue: Recommendations and Reviews

I'm in the market for a beginner/bargain jump break stick. I break fine with warped house cue sitting around the table, so I'm not too concerned with getting something silly expensive. My original range was 75-100. Both of these are the same price. They come with a case or a pool glove and I am interested in trying the glove and the case is crap, so I will get the glove.

I'm guessing 21 oz is the best weight for a break cue because of momentum. Newtons law or something like that. I was originally looking at the Players Cue, but saw the Action cue. The action cue has stainless joints instead of wood. Perhaps that would make it better? If you have any better or other options let me know. Also do cue's purchased online typically come with joint protectors, or is that something that is supposed to be purchased separately?

i have been using the players for over a year now and it has served me well. i used it to learn to jump and it breaks well. the joint only says wood to wood because the flat surfaces that touch are wood. the actual joint is a quick release pin that goes into a metal insert in the shaft. i have a 21oz but i like heavy cues (my main shooter is 21.5). now that i can jump i am bumping up to a lomax jump cue and am going to have a custom breaker made to match my shooter but i think this is a good entry level starter.

Consider the J&J model. Can't go wrong here - solid piece of equipment. Regarding weight, its really a matter of preference. Actually, one growing school of thought holds that lighter is better, as the key is speed vs power. So, I'd recommend either the same weight as your player, or a little lighter.

I have always believed the lighter the break cue the better (within reason). My Omen (current player) is just over 19oz. and my Mezz BK is 18, just as stated above its speed vs power. I believe it was Mike Sigel who referred to it as club-head speed. The faster I can move the cue, the more speed i can generate on the CB as opposed to using the momentum of a heavier cue which takes more effort to move.

I think both schools of thought are right on. I'm a person that would rather have the extra weight. The only reason is that you can control the aim on CB better because your not having to swing it as hard. There's a guy here in OKC that makes a hell of jump/break named sean huckleberry. I've played with many of his and they are all on the heavy side. I'm not sure if he posts on here or not but if you want his number you can PM me for it.

Between those two, I would pick the Players J/B. I broke with one for years before I got my Tiger IceBreaker.

When you're ready to upgrade from that, consider the IceBreaker. It jumps and breaks better than any other J/B I've tried.

J&J Model being the Players cue? I guess the whole speed vs power makes sense. I don't really have a problem generating either though lol. Probably just make it easy and go with the 19 like my playing cue.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was at first leaning towards the Players because the name was familiar. (Even though I'm not familiar with half of the names, and my familiarity probably isn't a sign of quality) but I saw the second one for the same price with the "Stainless Joints" and it got my attention.

I would say save a couple bucks and pickup a Varney :). Well worth the money! I think if you can jump you are probably an average player right? Might as well get some equipment that will last! Just my .02.

I use an action. When I was looking for a j/b I was unsure if I would even like it and so far no problems yet. For me it works fine Ive used high end j/b and they did the same thing as elcheapo

if you're looking to get a custom i'd go with a gilbert/ohmen/arnot

if you're trying to save cash i'd get a j&j. they're hard to beat for the dough

You got a link to that? I'd say I'm an average player. I'm not going to put up a fight with good competition, but I'll get a few good racks in. I can jump a little bit with my playing cue, but not nearly as well as I want. Which is why I'm seeking a jump cue. If I get a good break in I can run the table, but it doesn't happen very often yet.

Pm member Kevin Varney and he will get you going. I have tried a lot of jb cues and none of them ever stayed in my bag because it's hard to find one that does both very well. Well the varney does both VERY well!

Rootbeer i think your better off getting a dedicated jump cue instead of a 3 peice jump break....you dont have to spend a lot of money look here...i have this cue it jumps just fine...

change the tip to ceramic or phenolic if you want super hops...

nothing wrong with jump break combo cues....but the dedicated cues are usually always better.
nothing wrong with breaking with barcues...i do all the time and love the breaks i get...
as long as the ferrule and tip are good i use one....if there isnt a decent bar cue thats the only time i get out my break stick.

I like that, and I understand that the better things do one thing really well instead of 2 decent. However I just want a stick that does a little bit of both. I can always upgrade, and probably will. I really just want something to jump, but I thought it was a good idea to get a dedicated break cue. My compromise is a jump break. A lot of people in my league use them already. My bag is also too small right now to hold 3 sticks.

I try to buy my pool supplies from players if I can. Nick Varner is selling jump break cues. I can't think of a better place to buy a cue. I wish more people thought buying their cues and supplies from the pro players they support. I think we can all agree that players should make more cash.

I don't understand why people would buy a cue from a ad agency ( you know who's name belongs here) instead of Nick Varner...It is the same factory making them all why not give one of the players the cash you are spending?

Just a suggestion for all you guys out there. If you are going to spend some money in pool try asking a local pro if he can sell you the item first. Chances are he can get you a better deal anyway.

Get me a link or something more than just a name and I'll give him a holler. I searched his name and got nothing.

i actually think andy gilberts j/b's jump better than any jump cue on the market. i feel like on 4.5" pockets i'm 50% to make the ball i'm trying to hit
