Help needed !

I have a Tim Scruggs Sneaky Pete that I just bought.

It has a high gloss finish on it.

Feels sticky ( the butt section) when I'm playing with it.

I'm thinking of having this finish taken off and having maybe a Tung Oil Finnish applied.

Guy's in my pool hall say I can just take off the High Gloss Finnish with some steel wool.

Is this something that should be left to a professional or should I attempt this myself.

I know the wood should be sealed after the Finnish is taken off.

Any comments would would be appreciated.

I'm a really fussy guy about my cue's.

I have 3 tim scruggs cues and they are not tacky . Maybe some one put superglue on the when it was refinished and didn't do it right . You should maybe send it to Tim .

super glue is not tacky it turns hard as a rock

I think that Paul gave you the best answer to your questions. By using the steel wool you will remove the glaze and shine giving a satin finish but it does not remove the original finish so that a new one need not be applied.

If you are sure that you would rather have a oil finish instead of a film finish then the old finish must be sanded down to bare wood and then sanded some more. Once a finish has been put onto a wood surface it soaks in. So just removing the outer finish will be little help as the oil finish won't soak in. Some places it will soak in much more than others making for a splotchy cue. Tung oil can be bought at about any sporting goods store that sells guns and such. Be warned in advance that an oil finish does not protect wood from moisture transfer nearly as good as a film finish. Some oils, in fact, actually attract more moisture than if the wood was left bare.

It sounds to me that someone has applied wax to your cue an it didn't work out. If it were mine I would I would wet-sand butt with 1500. I believe this will solve your problem an yes get it done by a professional. This won't devalue your cue an should do the trick.
