Help! OB-1 shaft large splinter

Hey guys,

Gotta say I'm super bummed right now... :(

I just got a like-new ob-1 in the mail today from SwissChris - who I must say first of all is at NO fault in this situation, he was a great seller.

After letting it come to room temperature for several hours, I went to the tables to do the usual tests. I didn't even shoot a full rack with it as I was meeting a deadline for tonight, but everything met my expectations and I really enjoyed the hit, so I packed up pretty quickly.

The shaft had the some of the tiny splinters that I had heard about in ob shafts, but it wasn't really a big deal as they were pretty far down the shaft. I just took it home and gave it the usual magic eraser and micro grit sandpaper routine. After I was done cleaning and lightly sanding the shaft, I was using a leather burnisher on it stroking it through my closed bridge just to feel it.

Well imagine my surprise when a CHUNK of wood splintered off the shaft when I stroked it through my bridge at a medium speed. I didn't even know what had happened until I turned the shaft over and THANK GOD I'm only 20 because if I was my dad's age that might have been the end for me  .

Anyway how there's a large splinter about 5/8ths of an inch long about 7 inches from the joint end of my shaft. I'm really quite distraught and I don't know what to do about it.

I took some pictures but they're a little blurry and I don't know how to put them up, plus I still have a ton of homework to do tonight.

Any suggestions as to what I should do are completely welcome. Also feel free to offer your services if you have handled this type of situation before.

Thanks everyone in advance

This would seem to cover the situation. Have you written to the manufacturers?

OB Cues Product Warranty

OB Cues warrants, to the original purchaser, all OB Cues products to be free from defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product when purchased from an authorized OB Cues Dealer. Authorized OB Cues dealers are Direct Retail Dealers as well as Network Retail Dealers. Direct Retail Dealers are listed here on our website.
Product Registration is required and should be completed at or near the time of purchase.
In the event an OB Cues product needs repair or replacement, it must be returned with proper documentation to OB Cues for determination of warranty coverage. All warrantable issues will be repaired if possible. In those circumstances where the warrantable issue is not repairable, the product will be replaced. If the condition is not a warrantable issue, OB Cues will contact the owner with an estimate for repairs, or replacement. In the event OB Cues receives a package with no discernable contact, the package will be held until claimed. At that time, the item can be considered for determination of warranty coverage.
Things not covered by the OB Cues Warranty include, but are not limited to:
• Damage due to abuse or neglect.
• Damage caused by playing with an OB-1 Cue Shaft without the carbon fiber pad that is placed between the tip and the ferrule.
• Custom joint work provided outside OB Cues to fit a Partial OB-1 cue shaft to a cue. When a Partial OB-1 cue shaft is the original purchase, then OB Cues will replace a defective cue shaft with another Partial OB-1 cue shaft.
This is the sole warranty of OB Cues and no other warranties are either expressed or implied, in fact or by law.
OB Cues liability is limited to the replacement of the OB Cues product.
OB Cues shall not be liable for any consequential, special, incidental or punitive damages resulting from or caused by any failed OB Cues product.

Thanks for your help, Peter, but unfortunately the warranty only applies to the original purchaser, which wasn't me.

I would contact them anyhow. They might feel that the cost of a new shaft is better than negative publicity.

Seems like a lot of damage has already been done. The company really should have been contacted before this was put on a world wide forum.

I would just contact Royce, I had a small problem with mine. Which also was bought second hand and he handled it with first class customer service. Give them a call.

From the tone of his post, I don't feel like he was trying to bash or cast blame. He just wanted to know how to remedy the situation. Do what RandyG and Ray said, contact Royce.

Agreed...he is not trying to rub anybody's name in the dirt. He is merely stating a fact that it is splintered and trying to find out the next step. I think he did just that (contact the company and have it fixed). This may help someone down the road and they would not have to start a new thread because all the info is right here and they can find this post with a search and remedy their situation.

+1 to all the comments above.
Even if you're a second owner, they still treat you like the first. Email them, send it in and they'll take care of you!

Thanks for clarifying my message for me guys - I'm really not one to bash at all, I just wanted some advice since I am such a young player and all.

I'm extremely busy with school and extracurricular commitments this week but when I get the chance to call them I'll be sure to post here :)

Thanks again guys!

It is not necessary to go public with a problem and damage the reputation of an upstanding company. All he had to do was google them and get contact information.

It doesn't matter one little bit what the intentions were... whether he intended to do them damage by bashing them is inconsequential. What matters is the action he took, and that action has caused the company damage to it's reputation. It puts a red mark on them and all he had to do was keep his mouth shut in public, and keep it private until he had exhaused private avenues of reconciliation.

I doubt he intended to do any harm, I think it was done in haste, while emotionally upset because his shaft was now junk. But his actions have done harm regardless of his intentions. He certainly intended to make the problem public and he made it public and had not even discussed with the maker of the shaft. That's just wrong.

Making it public before asking them for help was not the right way to go about it. It was an error in judgement. I don't hate the poster but he needs to realize that running his mouth in public has done them harm and it ain't right.

If a man has a problem then that man goes to the other man and talks about the problem first. If the other man ain't ready to make things right then "steps" might need to be taken. Pretty simple.

Seriously? This is a public forum. He said nothing bad about the company. Are you the forum police? Not trying to be a jerk but he has every right to come here and ask for advice. I mean wood splinters. It happens. It could have happened to a Southwest. I fail to see that as bashing or damaging.

I have to say I'm utterly distraught at your reaction  .

I've been playing this game for only 2 years and change and I've never had this happen before. EXCUSE ME for going to an enthusiasts forum for asking for advice when I didn't know how to handle the situation. Apparently OB is a much smaller and more personal company than I had expected. How was I supposed to know that they wouldn't give me the corporate run-around otherwise?

Did your girlfriend just cheat on you or something? If that actually happened than I'm sorry, bu honestly, what is your problem?

At any rate, I think I got the advice I needed from this thread.

Since some people are somehow getting angry at my request for advice, I'll go ahead and ask the mods to shut this one down.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

I read the post and didn't see any bashing going on. It in no way reflected poorly on OB-1 in my opinion. You came to get advice and you got it. Hope everything works out for you.

Our warranty does apply to the original owner, but we can always make decisions based on "Good Will". I can't make any promises until I get a look at it, but we always do our best to make sure that everyone is happy with our products.

If you look on our website, you will find a product return form on the warranty page. Print it off, fill in what you can and send it in with the cue shaft. We will get a look at it and let you know what we can do. The form is important because the person who receives your cue shaft may not be me and won't know anything about it other than what you put on the return form. If they have questions, they come to me to see if I know something about it.

So go ahead and call us or send it in to us. I am pretty sure we can make you happy!
