such subtle difference ( to me )

#3, a cue progress was thought to be ebony, until i turned it
has a reddish purplish tint to it
like those descriptions? :wink:
is it bois de rose????????

bottom piece for certain is ebony

#1 & #2 are SUPPOSED to be the same as #3
but i dont think they are
i THINK #1 & #3 are , but #2 just might be ebony

i would have thought if it was bois de rose you would have smelled it cutting or sanding, but it sure dosen't look like ebony.

I was gonna say MortuaryMike was so kind enough to send me a small piece to make some j/p's from and it looks just like the piece he sent me. And damn if EVERYTHING that touched it would turn red. Didn't know that at the time and had sandwiched two white rings with an aluminum ring and holy cow it was a PITA to keep those rings white while sanding.

l love this wood!

I just turned a piece of this stuff myself. It was dark black cherry before I turned it. It's now beet red with nice black lines.
It's too bad there's no way to keep it red. It's spectacular.

Or is there a way?

My first impression was that it might be East Indian Rosewood, but then I went down to the shop and took another look at the wood I have that was sold to me as Bois de Rose.
You pick 'em!
The Bois de Rose that I have is significantly heavier than the EI RW - like Ebony heavy!
Gotta just love wood, don't ya?

#2 I don't see the grain but looks like ebony.
#1 is macassar to me.
#3 is bois de rose like already mentioned.

It is hard to identify many woods that have sat in the square for a long time as they turn darker. Even Cocobolo can turn very dark brown and show none of the nice grain until you cut into it.

I should of said this in the pictures I posted.
bois de rose with ebony points. It was very hard to get any kind of picture the showed the bois de rose as a dark cherry color, the ebony points don't really stand out.
