Help with Schon joint

So I have been picking up some different shafts to put on my Schon.
Some I like and some I don’t for my own reasons.

Call me crazy but I find myself not liking those shafts that don’t have the Schon pilot.
I thought by just getting a piloted 5/16 X14 shaft would feel the same.
It just doesn’t.

So am I crazy? I am the only one who feels this way?

What about other 5/16 x14 butts. If you switch them out do they just as good as the one made by Joss or Jacoby?

My belief is 90% of the hit of a cue is in the shaft . Put the Schon shaft on another butt and it will hit like a Schon . They have a hit all there own . This is my opinion and I'm sticken to it . GL Jim:thumbup:

While I may not be a cue maker, I think it's a lot less than 90%. The joint is a huge part also, talking about "feel" not just deflection and pure performance things. I'd say more than half but less than 70% is in the tip and shaft. I have a Ned Morris with 3 different shafts it came with, plus an after market Players HXT shaft, with all 4 it feels a bit different, but the feel of the hit is similar.

Cool , That's your opinion and I'm hoping you are sticken with it . I have had lots of cues with different joints , and couldn't shoot well with any of them . Jim

The schon joint is sliiightly different than other 5/16 x 14. I think the reason you are liking shafts with the actual schon joint and pilot is because they fit better and more snug. When i bought my schon i got a predator 314 2 with a 5/16 x 14 joint and it didnt fit the butt right. It was slightly askew where it met the butt meaning that it would stick out a bit on one side and stick in a bit on the other side. I returned that one and ended up getting a predator from seyberts. Seyberts actually sends predator blanks to schon and has schon put the joint on for them. That predator fit FLAWLESSLY at the joint, and did seem to shoot a bit better. Unfortunately for me that predator also was warped upon arrival so that one was sent back too :( . Now I am just playing with the standard schon and loving it.

Yeah, I am not talking about the perfoamce of the shaft.
Just talking about the feel.
I also had one very stiff tapered shaft made for this and it just misses that... solid feel?

Just hard for me describe I guess.

I agree with you that the Schon joint is much better feeling and to me it plays better.

If you look closely at the Schon shaft, the threaded collar is encased in plastic. Same with Runde's. I believe it softens the hit a little. I have tried other shafts as well and they seem to "Hit' a little firmer.

Now THAT is my 2 cents!!

How can you tell if a piloted joint fits perfectly? When screwed together you can not see how well the pilot fits.
Unless you are superman with x-ray vision.

I have two Schons, and have used standard Schon shafts from different era's, Z2, 314-2, and Mezz WD700 shafts with them. Some were piloted shafts, and some were just 5/16x14 standard shafts with a very small pilot.

Didn't notice any difference in hit, the pilots on the third party shafts, even when nice and deep, still don't fill up the hole completely or cinch tightly until the final turn, same as the more shallower ones. Once I realized that I quit worrying about paying extra for deeper piloted shafts...
