help with threads

I need an education on 3/8-10 threads.

I am using a 3/8-10 tap from Atlas into a 5/16 hole and I am using 3/8-10 SS bullet nose joint pins. All is well with that setup.

I would like to use a brass pin with the barrel in the center. The trouble is that those pins will not screw into the hole that I tap with my 3/8-10 tap.

Do I need another tap, a different size hole, or am I crazy.

I appreciate any help.

The barrel is .382" ,the hole is .3125'', it shouldn't fit.
I hope you didn't expect to crush those threads.
 
I bought a 3/8 carbide end mill off ebay for a few bucks, and use it to cut the hole for the barrel. So far, it has worked great!

Are you using the brass 3/8-10 pin with a flat minor on it? These tend to go in a bit harder. Atlas actually sells a special tap to put the center drilled pins in. The minor is about .308" or 7.8mm.

I measured the minor thread dia and it is .308. I will look for a tap for this thread.

The standard 3/8-10 tap will work fine no matter what the hole size.. I use the standard atlas 3/8-10 tap for every 3/8-10 pin that I have ever installed.. Now if you have a 5/16 or .3125 hole with a 3/8-10 thread installed and a standard 3/8-10 pin will fit but one with a .308 minor will not I will venture to say that pin you are useing is not a 10 pitch or is defective in some way... Measure you threads and make sure that you have 10 threads in an inch. Then measure your pitch diameter and see if they measure about .372

The threads on the brass pin measure .372 and .309. It is a 10 tpi pin.

I forgot to mention I am trying to put in a phenolic insert so it is pretty tight even with the SS pin.

The threads on a SS pin measure .372 and .279.

I guess I will need a hammer!! lol

Its the barrel causing you problems. You have to bore out the hole to accomodate the barrel. I tried to force one of those pins in on one of my first sneakys, and it freakin split open and looked like a banana peel, lol. I didnt realize the barrel was actually 3/8 inch diameter. Thats why i got the end mill. Its prolly a thou undersized, and now, the barrels fit nice and snug, with nearly zero play. I cant take credit for any of this knowledge tho, i got advice from several cue makers far smarter than me, and after a few tries, i succeeded in accurately installing a pin, lol.
