Maybe this is not the best place to ask but my old original It's George case is coming apart at the bottom.I can pull the bottom cap & pvc ?out some.Is it PVC
& can you use cleaner & pvc glue to repair it?I don't want to screw it up.

I believe it is PVC so the typical products will work just fine. Even if it is ABS the same products will work. It does nor require following Uniform Plumbing Code or inspection. :smile: PVC products will work on ABS and vice-versa, it just won't pass code.


I would just make an effort to be very tidy. I have seen some pretty messy repair jobs on cases that could have been made right again if just some reasonable care was taken.

For example I would mask off the exterior of the case to prevent any little accidents.

Sorry Doc
PVC glue will absolutely not work on ABS or the reverse
It may look like its holding but that's not happening

That's the popular misconception and what plumbers are taught.


Just ask this guy:

A couple of years ago, I did an experimetnt for the Oregon Association of Home Inspectors. I made up about 24 fittings using combinations of ABS and PVC pipe glued to each other with every combination of correct and incorrect cement products that I could find. I then sawed each connection in half to examine the finished joints. Some looked better than others but they were all strong joints.

At the next meeting, I passed out the pieces to the membership along with hammers, pliers and vice grips and invited them to destroy the connections. I wanted to see which fittings failed and how they failed.

By the end of the evening, not a single joint failed. They all broke at the point where the pipe met the fitting, but the cemented surfaces remained glued to each other in every case. This included PVC glued to PVC with ABS cement and vice versa.

Others have tried it, including myself in my experiments for case building. Officially it does not work, and I would not suggest anybody use it in plumbing, but for general applications it has been demonstrated to work just fine.

Of course, if one really does not know what plastic one has, then a transition cement would be appropriate and it is readily available. It's hard to argue with that.

Maybe in the short term the joints may hold,
But I have done too many repairs to count where inappropriate glues have been used in the field and have failed.
I'm sure on a case it would be fine :)

That's what I am saying.

I wouldn't advise it for plumbing of course...but this isn't plumbing.

Well I cleaned & glued it after masking the case it seems to have be fine.I didn't use a lot of glue,just the area where it was glued before.Time will tell.
