Here's What I Know About the 50th Anniversary GINACUE

Hall of Fame Cuemaker NO DOUBT

Ernie is one of the best Tool and Die makers.
His shop is spotless.
If he needs something he makes it.

Met Ernie thru Bert Schrager and I will cherish those conversations.

Ernie was going to design a One of a Kind cue for me about 25 years ago.
it was going to cost 5K. He described it to me and as I was reaching into my pocket to get the 5K, he said I am going to make 20 and give you the best one?

We are all stubborn in our own way.

I never got that cue, but Ernie in my mind makes the prettiest cues of all time.

Wonder who is going to get the best cue out of 50.
It will not certainly be one of a Kind.

No doubt they will be gorgeous. But I'm like you, anniversary cues are far from one of a kind. That said, you'll likely never see but one or two ever come up for sale again once they are buried into private collections.

Not too many yet. I don't know how many are on his "want list" right now, but it is less than 50. Early on in the process Ernie had a guy call him, ask how much they were going to be, and when Ernie told him, 13-15K, the guy responded "I'll take them all", but Ernie wouldn't do it.

Please take that girl on the right in your avi to your local USPS office, slap a few stamps on that pretty forehead and mail her to me. I have something I want to tell her.

Kevin
Hi Kevin,
the right Girl is my Fav too:wink:
please call Ernie and ask about number 13 or 30 or 48, want one of them:grin:
thanks Buddy,
Ralf

i obviously dont know much about cues ....:o
but if i understand this correctly ernie will make 50 cues that all look the same
(numbered??) and will cost 13-15k each??
yes??
sorry for a very naive question

Ernie doesn't drink coffee but if he did, he'd have one of those deals like I do that grinds the beans, heats the water, steep the beans, makes the coffee and then dumps the grounds. EXCEPT he'd have his attached to some direct spring water feed and connected to some filtration system he designed. The beans would be Colombian (of course) but the pickers would just put them in some box in Columbia, close the lid and they would shuttle to The Master's Machine. When the grounds dump they would direct shuttle to Luce's garden for mulch.

And if he were like me, all of that to pour into a styrofoam cup to acquire the authentic Winchell's "ting of plastic" aftertaste.

JK - I use K-cups now and drink more coffee than ever.

The 50 cues is correct. He made 30 for his 30th, 40 for his 40th, and this one will be 50. Maybe I'm showing West Coast bias, but I can't think of another maker that could make a 50th besides Tad and he doesn't do Anniversary series cues.

They will for sure all be the same design. There might be some variations (I think there were maybe in the 30th? - a few ivory joints where the rest were steel maybe? and I don't know in the 40th) and there might not, but yeah, 50 basically if not completely identical cues commemorating his 50 years as a cue maker (and maybe his retirement from active building).

I don't think either the 30th or 40th cues were numbered (17 of 30 for example), but that's a good question and I'll ask him.

Last we talked, he was yet to fix a price but he told me he has been telling people 13-15K and Ernie is always way solid on the stuff he says.

His 30 and 40th both sold out real quick and both have held their value with some escalation. As many as there are, think about how many you have seen traded? Its a thing collectors hang on to with pride, which is what collecting is all about.

Thanks

Kevin

Every time I think of Styrofoam cups and coffee, I always think of sitting in that stool at Schrager's shop, drinking that awful luke warm instant coffee with him in those awful cups strewn all over the place, trying to motivate him to finish me a cue.

"yeah Bert that sure is a funny story, that Martin was a heck of a guy. Hey could you show me how that lathe works by putting the butt of my new cue in it?"

That leaves me both on the left? Deal!

I've sent you a PM.

Thanks

The 50 cues is correct. He made 30 for his 30th, 40 for his 40th, and this one will be 50.

Which brings the question... How many cues does he make yearly? I thought these guys make very limited cues every year... If he makes per se 70 cues a year, does it mean his regular production will be of only 20 cues that year???

Thanks for the feedback

He has always made about 100 cues a year. Its generally 3 batches a year with 30-35 cues in each. And yes, his "regular production" this year will include his Anniversary cues and just a few others.

After that, perhaps a couple of cues a year, but we will see how that shakes out.

I flew to LA this past weekend for my birthday and had the pleasure of hanging out with Ernie, OMGWTF, and junksecret.

The 50th batch is amazing. Not going to divulge too much but I can say that there are a couple new elements I've never seen in a Gina and a few of the cues he made VERY special. Lots of gold in them all as well.

He's pretty much done except for finishing the shafts, which he does last.

I had an amazing weekend and can't wait to go back to LA again. Heck I might even move there haha.

Lastly I'd like to thank junksecret for showing me the LA ropes. Joe is one of the nicest guys I've ever met and I'm proud to call him my friend.

Are you going to be getting one of the cues?
It looks like you guys whacked out that meal, not many leftovers.

Ernie is a master tool and die maker, his tooling is top notch! The frames he has acquired over the years is awesome!

Nice work champ!

Hi Brandon, I am extremely envious. :) :) :) I'm very happy you had the chance to spend some quality time with "master" Ernie. The visit to the Ginacue shop is definitely one of the highlights of my pool life. Ernie is a genius.

Safe travels my friend,
JimmyK

Thanks brotha! The shop is insane, I had NO idea. I've seen the TAR interview but until you actually step foot in there and see all the goings on you can't really process the complexity of it. He showed me some of the things he had to build just to make the 50th batch and by the time he was done I was as lost as a turkey in a wheat field. His engineering skills are as strong as a five dollar pencil. I'm going back this summer. LA and Malibu have me hooked!

I'm on the list and still considering it but I don't think I can swing it. They are a little pricey and I already have something in the works with him right now that is also "a little pricey". The 50th is absolutely gorgeous and even though it has some new elements not before seen in Ginas, it is still unmistakingly a Gina. It looks expensive.
