Hey all, I'm just curious about skill levels

you have to consider that C-B-A rating is different depending where you live. B players in your area might not be the same B players in my area. The rating here goes like this:

C
B
A
AA
AAA
Semi-Pro
Pro

people tell me I'm a strong B or even an A

In this rating system I am roughly the same as you jimbo. I considered this around a C in the other system above.

its a regional thing, in bigger citys where there is more talent (the letter goes down when you go to a big ger city)a player from a smaller area might be considered an A player at home. he will be a B player when he walks into Hard Times, i promis you he isnt an A player in that gladitor acadimy he is a B player.

in Az. back in 92 I was a mid level 8 player-on an average day, could I beat a 9 or 10 perhaps but it was tough-I could steam roll any 7 80% of the time, 4 out of 5 days, i usually have one day out of 5 I just cant play.
Is that rating system still alive?, I waslys made good $$$ in Az, I would go down there from Vegas when ever I was on short $$$, i never lost in that town, I never booked a winner in Hard times, so there you go-where your at determines the "Letter" A.B.C. etc of your speed,

Dave K asked what my level was, I have to look into that contest thing here (if an old coot like me can find it) :)

<a little editing magic>

Actually what specifically sparked this thought was the thread here "How do I fix this" The poster had an interesting question, and my curiosity stemmed from the posters who are trying to help. Knowing their skill levels would be useful to all. :)

Hey, I'm always willing to help an old coot ...

The rules of the game :

A tabulation of final scores (out of 1000) for this years contest:

There are also results from a previous tournament, but be careful of you find it, the scores were out of 2000 iirc.

Good observation for a coot btw.

Dave, not even close to being a coot at 48.5 years :p , maybe in a few years ...

these rating systems can easily lead to confusion when compared to each other. In the federation I'm in, a C player would never break and run out, a B player would BnR 5% of the time. I can BnR on average a rack a night (sometimes I do 2 or 3..or none) that would be considered an A here...but a C in other systems because they don't have AA or AAA.

Easy to be mistaken

I would consider myself a B with this rating system. Good thread, I hope everybody responds, would be kind of cool to see what everyones skill level is.

No way in hell i'm A,but how bad is "c"?Terrible?could someone give an example of what a C player would do on average?Maybe even B and A?

Thanks,

If you own to many nice cues ya probaly suck at pool and just have to much money. In that case I would love the wild 5 .:D :D ;)

Its so different from place to place ,but heres how its ranked here.........
C
B3
B2
B1
A3
A2
A1
MASTERS

I play A3.should be A2,but thats why we win a trip every year.;) :D

I suck on most dayz, horrible at best other times. Make a ball and think I can play just to dog it again....vicious damn circle!:D

Just finished Dave K's suggested test

Ok, first of all I want to say that this is about the best exercise I've ever attempted that has been able to keep my interest and focus.

As you get deeper into the racks you play, you realize how important it is to concentrate. One boo boo and its the end of that frame.

At any rate after completing it I scored a 648. Not so bad I suppose for being completely away from the game for over 12yrs. I did it in 5 seperate sessions with one practice rack to begin each one.

I missed a few ridiculous shots that cost me the majority of a few racks. I lost the cue ball a few times and glued myself safe.

It didn't take long to realize playing for the last five rotation layout was more integral to the entire frame than I first realized. I do think that it may be a worth while thing at times to move the cue ball after the break as the rules allow and take a penalty. Next time I'll try more of that. I broke a sweat doing this and thats a great thing to accomplish IMO while drilling yourself. Dead stroke isn't far when you start getting in that groove.

Thanks for pointing this skill test out. It is going to become a regular part of my straight pool practice.

I believe that this game was originated by Allen Hopkins, he deserves the credit.

Hi all,

I would say that I am anywhere between a C+ and a B depending on several factors (game being played, focus, attitude towards the game at the time I am playing, etc...).

Overall, I am closer to the C+ for 9-Ball and closer to the B for 8-Ball.

I love 14.1 but do not play it nearly enough to even rate on a scale for the game.

One Pocket is also very interesting to me but I have played less than 10 sessions of the game.

Thanks for the thread, it is a great idea.

OK, Allen if you're out there reading this ... great exercise! Thanks!

Dave, thanks still to you for pointing me to it. Practicing was something I've never really got into before these past few days while running through this test. For as long as I've been playing, I always found myself banging at rails after a few short minutes of attempting to practice. This was a refreshing change. I'm confident that within a few weeks I'll get myself firmly in the mid 700's. Very enjoyable time at the table when you're alone.

I think the concept of scoring individual racks plays a major factor in maintaining interest and concentration in the exercise. Unlike what I normally did which has been to try to make high runs in straight pool. Usually all I end up with is being bored.

I VERY highly recommend this exercise.

I guess I am around B+ speed. I base this on the idea of entering my last "B" tourney and going undefeated. Some of the guys suggested I might be an A, but I don't think so. Occationally I will play horrible, and sometimes A speed. My best is 4 racks of 9 ball and 5 racks of 8 ball. I never play straight pool, so not much of a run there. I live in the Boston, MA area, if that helps as a reference. My best skills are a strong stoke, a very hard break, and pretty good ball pocketing skills. Also, I think good pattern play helps me play better than my technical skills would indicate. That is why I think I play stronger 8 ball, because that game seems to reward good strategy and pattern play more so than 9 ball, which to me is all about pure shotmaking/position, and only a little bit of strategy.

ok around here it goes like this
open- pro's and top level semi-pro
a
b
c
d
I usually fall into the A division for 9 ball, open division for 8 ball

F-

I never won any tournaments. Lose all my matches in league play. Everyone keeps telling me that they love playing me (sure win) because I make them play better. Keep donating money(dead money). I suck.
