hey AZers,
im in a communication class at school and was wondering if you guys would be able to help me out. i need to give a persuasive speech and talk to the class. i was planning on talking about why i think pool is the hardest sport. i was going to compare it to golf and how i think pool is harder. any input would be great.
Thanks for your help

take a lesson from PJ and use the same point in every sentence of the debate  PJ got skills at this ;) JK

PS: do not emulate PJ`s debating skills or you will be laughed at and given a "F" lol

It is not remotely as hard as golf. Pick another proposition. I am sure your teacher does not require that you be right but surely it would make things easier.

Archery would be a better comparison, the technology of Archery has made it easier to do at a high level whereas pool is still time on task.

i was just using golf as an example. i could compare it to anything. do u guys have any like, things i should touch on in my speech on why pool is hard. such as table conditions, the humidity of the air and how the balls are reacting. type of cloth, type of balls, etc

Pool is the hardest sport because you have to play it hungry (i.e. no food in your belly)!

Pool is, indeed, harder than golf but you'll have a hard time convincing some people of that. Better go for something else. This has been hashed over multiple time here and on other forums.

1. After the break, layouts are never the same. Every game is different.
2. Your opponent is directly opposing you. In golf, you and your opponent are playing against the course.
3. Anybody ever have their golf ball put in jail by the opponent?

Make an argument that pool is even a sport. Most people dont recognize it as one. More of a Hobby. Like Darts, Cards, Competitive Knitting.

Breaking down the game of pool... Using a stick with a tip diameter of 13mm (or less) striking a sphere to travel a few feet to hit another sphere for it to enter a pocket...

Nothing short of amazing. Pool players, give yourselves a pat on the back.

Here are some idea/topics to start on:

Pool is more mentally challenging, golf is more physically challenging.

In pool you play against an opponent who can directly affect how you play (or whether or not you play at all). In golf you play against the course.

Pool has more variables, but less variation within those variables. Golf has less variables, but more variation within those variables. For example, in pool you have 6 pockets to choose from, but the conditions to make a ball in those pockets doesn't change over the course of the game. In golf, you have one hole, no choice, but the terrain, weather, etc. changes for every hole.

It would probably be many times easier to make a proficient golf robot than a proficient pool robot.

To some, competitive knitting and pool are one in the same!

Big difference, you can take knitting needles on a plane, but not a pool cue...so pool must be more dangerous. If pool cues are deemed dangerous, than pool is a sport because you could be hurt or killed. What do you think, Mitch?

Plus, you can play safe :).

Rather than argueing that pool is harder than something, make a comparison where it is similar. It's mental and physical.

In golf you can make 3 errand shots (off fairway, sand, etc...) and one good putt and still make par. In pool you make one bad shot and you are done.

in pool every shot is a preasure shot, like a 6 foot putt that you can't miss but over and over the entire game, the mental stress is that much greater.

you can be pro level golf with 1,000,000 hit to 1,400,000 hit. most pro pool players have well above 3,000,000+

What about the guy who had a cue stuck in his head next to his eye? That could have killed him and it wasn't due to a fight. This is for the sports argument. I miss taking my cues on the plane with me......:(

Also I wanted to add to what Masayoshi said by saying that the playing conditions during a pool match can and do change. The cloth as well as the balls tend to get dirty with chalk, hand oils, powder, sweat, cigarette smoke and all sorts of other things that could be around the table.

Air-conditioners dry out the air causing speed changes in the cloth, table lights can make a difference as well in the speed and rebound of the rubber in the cushions.

We all know what a difference high humidity can have on a tables playing conditions too.

Also when playing tournaments you can play on many different tables. Just changing tables for different matches can bring a whole new set of not very obvious conditions. You can't always read the green in pool like you can in golf. You actually have to play on it and roll balls on the table to find it's idiosyncrasies and environmental conditions. It's very rare to play on one table with one set of conditions in a tournament.

Hope that helps,

Kevin
