Does anyone know what the high break at the US Championship was this past weekend? I see on the web-site George Lai had a 54 in the final frame. Not sure if that was the high for the event or not.

It would be nice to see the high break for each player as well!

I think that George may have had a 58 in the round-robin phase, but I can't find any detailed results on the website right now. He definitely had a large share of all the high breaks listed in the prelims.

Please tell me that the high break in this event is higher than that! If that is it, then that says alot about the state of snooker in the US!(it's terrible!)

What do you expect? A 147? LOL! In a country with no tour, no places to play, no places to learn and a public who doesn't even know what the game is.

i guess i shouldn't expect the talent level to be very high with such a low prize fund! still i thought there would be a little better showing. JMO

To be fair, we don't know how difficult the tables were.

Last year at the Canadian Championships, the tables were deadly. I was watching Alain Robidoux warm up and I don't remember him running more that 20-30 points.

The most I personally witnessed was a break of 40. The high breaks of the competition were a 115 and 85.

Keep in mind these guys are daily century runners.

Sounds like John Schmidt could sneak in there and snag a "USA Snooker Champion" title. I'll put you in next year, John. LOL

Yes,Cameron. That is exactly what you said!!The packet is very tight compare with the normal one that we used to play.It is the main reason why you did not see any higher break for the past 4 years. But the condition of the tables should be the best in the US.Beleive or not ,I think even the top Pros cannot make the centery easily over there because as good as George he might just hit a few 100+ for the past 10 years...

Hey Ray my name is Ray Doherty and I used to play a little bit of snooker back when I lived in Ireland. I think you are from New York and I am from Philly so I would love to get a chance to play some snooker against you. I know you are one of the best plsyers in the US so let me know where you play and maybe I can shoot up to NY for a day. Hopefully I can play good enough to test you a little bit. Let me know.

Hi Ray D,I heard about you actually from my friend in philly and you should be so tough to beat when you are in form....anyway,I am now practice at Prince snooker Club in Brooklyn, open everyday after 2pm,they have 6 snooker tables in good condition.Even it is not a open house for everyone, but you could ring the bell outside the front door, tell them that you know me ,they will let you go in....Address: 6322 20th avenue ,2/fl,Brooklyn..Tel:917-682-9988(Tommy-the owner)......we have 55 to 60 members to play snooker there consistantly(mostly chinese)Other than me,there are few pretty good players here, like Jian Wang(runner-up of nationals 2008 )and Henry Wong1/4 final of nationals 2008....Alan Morris came here last month and we got a great time.Hope to see you soon!!

Well if Alan had any say in the matter I'm sure he would have been at pains to ensure the pockets conformed exactly to the official templates used for recognised competition. You should be under no illusions how difficult the pro tables are if you are not used to them, and how immensely skillful the players are who make it look so easy at times, not just the pockets but the also the speed of the cushions and cloth. Conversely they can reasonably expect a uniformity of playing conditions from competition to competition that pool can't match.

Are you there Alan? Can you confirm how the tables were set up for the finals?

Ray I will take you up on that for sure, I was tough to beat about 15 years ago when I lived in Ireland but not really so tough to beat anymore! I will save that number and hopefully before too long I will get up there as the last good snooker player I played was Karen Corr about a year ago. It is good to see a good player like yourself posting on here, if they move the National's too your club I will practice up and give it a try, LA is a little far for me.

My understanding is that the world organization has not responded usefully to requests from the USSA for pocket templates. The pockets are what they are.

In which case it may well have been 'a bad un'. You do get the odd table that is as tight as a nun's proverbial.

The thing is too Boro that this is the only snooker event all year and they are playing short races so add that to a tight table and the break level is not that surprising. The guy that won seemed to be knocking in 40's and 50's pretty steadily so I am sure he is a strong enough player. I think it would be hard too stay loose in these conditions. Sometimes it is easy too knock poeple when you haven't been there yourself. The game is not just about big breaks.

Embassy Club snooker pockets

Sorry for this late response.

I couldn't get to be at the Championship this year, but of course followed it closely. The highest break of 58 by the eventual winner, George Lai.

I know the Embassy Billiards Club well of course, and there are three tables set up there with pockets roughly professional match standard. Ten of the Group matches would have been played on them, and twelve of the fifteen knockout matches (including both semifinals and final) would have been played on them.

Best wishes.

Alan.

Bob is right, it is very difficult to obtain the professional match pocket tamplates.

I had a meeting with a representative of World Snooker, the WPBSA's commercial arm, during the World Championship in Sheffield this year, and he told me that you have to get accreditation to have a set of pocket templates.

You have to go through their official suppliers, but he didn't tell me how you go about getting that accreditation.

We do however have a set of the pocket templates for International Billiard & Snooker Federation tournaments, which I am lead to believe are similar to the WPBSA ones - I have to check them out for myself though.

Best wishes.

Alan.

Hi Ray D!

Yeah I had a great time at The Prince Snooker Club when I went there back in March. The tables are in pretty good shape too as they are kept in very good condition by the owner Tommy.

To be honest, I said to Tommy the tables are a bit slower than what I am used to as I lost position several times by under hitting shots (I'm used to a lightening fast match table), but nevertheless I would certainly recommend anyone to go and play there. There is a great crowd of people there too - particularly Ray Fung and Tommy who are two fantastic guys!!

Best wishes.

Alan.
