Highest Compliment?

When I'm playing people, regardless of skill level, I usually get a compliment on something I do. I bank well, can kick out of everything, etc. and I usually take these compliments with a grain of salt and don't let them affect my ego and I certainly don't let them overestimate my ability (something I'm proud to say I'm getting a grasp of).

However, the occasional compliment will stick with me - and it doesn't inflate my ego, but rather let's me know that the time I've put into this game is paying off. Tonight, I got a compliment from a seasoned player on my stroke: I have a very clean, smooth stroke especially for my age. This made my night because I fully understand how important it is to stroke a ball correctly and I'm happy to have received this compliment (and I have from two other people who don't dish out compliments lightly).

After fixing my stance a few weeks ago I'm stroking and playing better than ever and I finally feel like I'm getting over the plateau that has been holding me back.

Anyway, I would like to help everyone indulge in fond memories: what are the highest compliments you've been paid or paid to anyone else?

EDIT: Another compliment is having people who are my seniors, who have been playing this game a lot longer than I have asking me for advice, and wanting to learn systems and things of that nature from me. I can't even legally drink a beer mind you. It just feels awesome and I cannot even began to explain how awesome this feels. I can only keep going up until I'm on the Fargo Top 100 List!

Good stuff man. I like that attitude.

I get what u mean by ur time put into your game paying off, I get words of encouragement from a few senior players and a pro who I take lessons from. I am not as young as you but I've only been playing pool seriously just under a year.

Keep it up!!
 
Funny. I hear the opposite all the time. How absolutely terrible my stroke looks.
 
Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

When I got done playing Oscar 10 ball at the barbox last year in reno he told me he liked my case.

God said I played like him, which made no sense because I was giving him the 8.

When I was rather young, about 18 I guess, there were 3 very old men sitting at the bar & I overheard one tell another that I was a player. When they got up to leave they all made a point to shake my hand & to tell me that I was a player.

I guess it meant more to me as I had to steal what I learned from watching a retired older gentleman that would not teach a 13 year old kid a thing.

The best compliment I got was after a money session where I got it ALL....
...the guy said " You $&@:angry:$#:angry:%€£¥." :angry::angry::angry:

I felt pretty good...:wink:

One of my first pro events I played Thorsten Hohmann. I was down 7-1 going to 11. It was a 10PM match and by this time all the other matches were done, so everyone was watching my set. I fell into a trance and ended up coming back and beating him 11-9.

I was eliminated later on by Chohan and Kiamco. When I was watching the finals Tony Robles was walking by and he stopped and told me- "That set you played with Hohmann was the best played set in this tournament." That was pretty strong, and helped me gain confidence that I could play some pool.

The moral of the story is to appreciate how impactful a sincere compliment can be. I'm one of the better players in my region and as much as I hate to lose, I know that when people beat me it may be their parallel to my win against Toasty. So I let them savor it, and I'm always looking for the opportunity to give someone a little wind in their sails.

Someone told me that I had the smoothest stroke in here. That made me feel real good for two reasons. For one I had been working primarily on my stroke for that whole year and two because of the level of players that were regulars in there. Little Tony, Jeff Abernathy and Brian Capps being a few.

I had been trying to emulate the efficiency of Buddy Hall's stroke for a solid year. It was nice to have someone say something nice.
 
I got a compliment one time that my money spent better than anyone else's, and it "smelled sweeter". Although further testing conclusively proved that it smells no different.
 
During the early '80s I was having a problem with a few things so I paid for a 2 hour lesson/question session from a pro.player champion in the'70s. His only compliment to me in the session was "if it's not nutted your not hooked" needless to say I thought that alone was worth the price of the session $80
