Highest Compliment?

Compliments are funny......there are a lot more insincere, superfluous compliments that are tossed around, especially in pool hall settings,
than genuine , well-intended remarks offered as praise or encouragement.......The truth is pretty much everybody bullshits in a pool parlor.

Someone once told me "wow, look at your stroke", I said "thanks", he said "it wasn't a compliment".

A player I knew had long hair and a beard....he got a haircut and shave because of a new job.
So I watched him practicing for a while and then I said " Damn, I didn't know who it was
til I saw you missing balls."
He was mad as a wet hen....

I was told I was a lousy player, but I knew it...so he couldn't hustle me. Yeah, that felt pretty good. ;)

"I don't let compliments affect my ego but seriously do you guys know how awesome i am"

My biggest compliment to date is a .10 cent winners plaque that I won at a tournament, but it does say BCAPL State Champion, Men's singles 8 ball, hope I can get a couple more of these.

Years ago, I took an instant dislike to a bonehead player after he lost to another player, attacked and tried to choke the his opponent because he lost $20 to him. I jumped in and pulled him off the other player.

Since then, wherever this guy went, there were always problems. I finally told him to not even talk to me anymore because he was such an A-hole.

And let's just say from then on, this bonehead disliked me as much as I disliked him.

About a year ago, I was playing in a weekly 9 ball tourney. My first round a pulled a young man who had just turned 21 so he could now play in the big pool rooms. He had been a top player in one of the kiddie pool rooms where he'd been a big fish in a little pond.

Well, I ran over him in the match, beating him 5-0. As I was reporting my match, I overheard the young man complaining to Bonehead, my enemy, that he couldn't believe he lost that bad to an ol' SOB like me.

Bonehead told the kid "Son, that guy that just beat you has forgotten more about pool than you'll ever know in your life! "

That really shocked me! Can't beat a compliment when it comes out of your enemy's mouth!

I don't ever get any compliments. That is good, because I hate getting them. Makes me feel really awkward. I have to get my compliments inderectly. When people refuse to play me I take that as a compliment. It could of course mean that they think I'm an asshole, or have B O or something. Nah, they're scared:D.

One of the best compliments that I heard was from my Dad. He rarely says anything positive. I heard that he told someone else that by brother is pretty good, but I was a better player.

Dad used to be the number two snooker player near my home town when he was in his 20's and 30's.

Let's change this up a bit...

Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.

Making your way in the pool world today takes away everything you got.
Hidin' your game from all your peers sure would help a lot.

wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go,

Where you can use a different name,
and you can get a wild 6 game,
you wanna be where you can see,
the skills that are in that place,

You wanna be where nobody knows your face...

One of my first pro events I played Thorsten Hohmann. I was down 7-1 going to 11. It was a 10PM match and by this time all the other matches were done, so everyone was watching my set. I fell into a trance and ended up coming back and beating him 11-9.

I was eliminated later on by Chohan and Kiamco. When I was watching the finals Tony Robles was walking by and he stopped and told me- "That set you played with Hohmann was the best played set in this tournament." That was pretty strong, and helped me gain confidence that I could play some pool.

The moral of the story is to appreciate how impactful a sincere compliment can be. I'm one of the better players in my region and as much as I hate to lose, I know that when people beat me it may be their parallel to my win against Toasty. So I let them savor it, and I'm always looking for the opportunity to give someone a little wind in their sails.

Rivals on the table, companions on the same road.

One time I lost a match to a young man that made me a little disappointed(well a lot) with myself. When I went to shake his hand, he was so thrilled to have beaten me that he HUGGED ME!!!!! It did put it all in perspective and I had to chuckle and got over myself real quick.

That's a good story, and one many can identify with. How great is it when you finally beat the top dog at your pool room?
