Hmmm What to do What to do

I'm not sure, what is the SBE? I haven't really found the right nitch for Drake's products. Hopefully dropping the prices they will move at the BCA event...be looking for a killer sale.

Sorry, the SBE is the Super Billiards Expo that Allen Hopkins puts on in Valley Forge, PA. Hopefully you will be there again this year.

Hello Everyone,

So I'm sitting here "No Sales today" wondering....what can I do. I love creating jobs for myself...but I am stumped at the moment.
I had while on Tour:
Robin Bell Sportswear
The Frog and Tadpole Jump Cue
Robin Dodson Collection of Cues (stores didn't sell jump cues very well)
And now....things have slowed down to almost a halt.

I am wondering how about starting a pool league? Well anyway that is why I am having you hearing my thoughts today. I played in I think 1 league in my life, I never really went to bars being that I always played on the Big Table.
I don't know, I wish I could fall back on this awesome education I had....but... that didn't happen.
Any ideas?

Robin

Robin, you introduce yourself to me at the DCC 2 years ago while you were demonstrating your jump cue. I did not have the foggiest idea of who you were and it was my first DCC. You seemed a little disappointed that I did not know who you were but you went on with the demonstration (sorry about that). Even though I knew how to jump and had an X-Breaker that I was in love with I still found myself wanting to listen to what you had to say. While you were showing me how to jump with your cue and some guy in the room interrupted us and mentioned to his son that your son was on the television show Drake and Josh or Josh and Drake. When he finished talking you came right back to me and that shows me you are a class act. When I got home I looked you up on the Internet and read all that I could find about you and it made for great reading. My kids watch Josh?s show all the time and up until I met you my kid's TV shows drove me nuts but I found myself paying attention to it because I now have a connection which was you. I told them that I had met you and how nice you were so they pointed out to me that there was an episode where Josh was playing pool. Now I am from Chicago and that means that I am a real tough person to try and sell anything to but one of my local pool halls were selling there collection of videos and they just so happened to have 2 of yours so I bought them both. Now watching just those 2 over and over again I learned how you put english on the ball for a certain shot that changed my game. You have the type of personality that makes people want to buy what your selling or things that are associated with you because not only does your product work but we like you and that is a great combination.

I think most of the pieces and resources are there for your next job creation you are just not seeing them clearly. You have lead a very interesting roller coaster life and with your sons help and experience in front of and maybe even behind the camera you should maybe look at doing some short stories about life on the road as a female pool player. You live in California so you would have access to Access Television Equipment which is free, all you have to do is join. There is most likely some female prot?g? you know that would be willing to shoot a couple of pilots with to present to the networks. There is just a hand full of movies about females that play pool in fact I can count them on one hand "Turn the River" and "Behind the Eight". It?s just a thought with very little cash output and using the resources that you have. Remember it does not have to be a movie but a series of stories because there is no way you can put everything that you have seen and done in one movie and us here in the pool world are always starved for good stories. The future of pool is locked in our kids especially our girls. If it were not for our women in pool there is no way we would have reached where we are now. I think this is way for you to go now.

I did sell my story about 10 years or so ago. Nothing came of it, mostly because of my faith. When asked how did you get off the drugs to world champion....Jesus being my answer wasn't what they wanted to hear.
They asked if I could leave him out, however without him it wouldn't be my story. They passed.

Pool seems to be at an all time low right now not to sure it is the right business to be getting into.
I do like the idea of doing something within the church...actually after the league Roy and I had for the church we had a Championship Tournament...handicap of course and our pastor won...it was perfect!
He asked if we were planning on doing the league again. So many of us made friendships I think I would love to go along those lines...time will tell, more is to be revealed.

You have to look at it a little different. Now could be the perfect time. Pool is not a fad and people will always be playing. Rents for buildings now are low, you can dictate your own terms in many cases. Buying a building is also well in the realm of possibility, they are all over the place in most cities. Funny thing is, pool has historically done well even in bad times. Bad times also creates opportunities. If it is what you want you can make it happen.

The rooms around here really don't look that busy, I am keeping my eye open for buildings now.

The main thing it to be looking for equipment. You want to have most everything you need bought and paid for in a warehouse just waiting for a place to set up. No debt, no partners, low overhead = success in a pool room. You never expect to get rich but a well run pool room can provide a nice living if done right.

I should add, those rooms you see that are not so busy, may be a different story if you were the owner. Don't assume they know what they are doing.

I think you should try it. The climate if perfect for it.

The perfect name for it woud be Robroy Billiards. Nice sound to it.

Robin, the devil isn't going to buy into a movie where Jesus is the Hero. Your looking at the wrong marketers. There are Christian movies out there and others like me that will watch. Here you go. http://www.fireproofthemovie.com/Thank you.

Pool Room?

Robin, What part of CA. are you living. I am in the Northern Idaho area, Coeur d'Alene, near Spokane, Wa. If I had the opportunity to play at a room owned by a pro, with the chance for lessons, seminars, etc. I would jump at the chance. I have played for over 45 years and still have much to learn. It would be your presence, if only part time that will make the difference in the success of the room. Without your help, I would not count on much income without the sale of liquor and or food.
Good luck on finding your way. I have been in the Art Glass business for over thirty years and yearn for a new direction, if only part time.

No, I won't be going this year...my business is just not doing well enough to travel that far.

Roy and I went to the movies (Taken, great movie) and seen a couple we talked about pool and some of the ideas we had. He is a pastor of another church he loved the idea too....just kind of fun to think about right now.

Other than pool I don't know what experience you have. So, really depends on what your qualified to do.
BTW- I still have a frog jump cue. It doesn't get used much but I still have it. Buying it from you and your husband was quite entertaining. I still remember you saying "don't try to make the ball, just try to hit it". I was having a great time.

Other skills I ditto on the I don't know. But after reading what everyone has been saying I do think I should stick with what I do know...something in billiards. Time will tell...right now looking for events that I can have a little space to sell my products. And the billiard stores are still ordering here and there.

Back to your roots

Just thought I would mention the Old Westminster Family Billiards is most likely available.
What better place for "Robroy's Family Billiard Emporium & School".

Just a couple of quick suggestions and comments:

If you are seriously looking for equipment for setting up your own room try Jay Helfert, who always seems to have a line on available commercial 9' tables. You might also want to try Gary's Billiards in Victorville, who also list tables here sometimes.

I like the idea of a room aimed at families rather than hard-core players, which would play well into your experiences. If you've ever been to a Dave & Busters you can see families lining up to pay $20 an hour on a Saturday night to play, so it seems that with the right mix of other entertainment and good food you should be able to make it work on a smaller scale. If you can get Drake to bus the tables it ought to bring in a big crowd of admirers!

Lastly, other than the branded products you are selling, have you ever considered creating a Pool training/tuition video product using yourself and Drake? I have no idea if he plays or not, but consider that there is nothing like that I know of in the marketplace. Something with the two of you could be marketed at a totally different segment than normal Pool tuition products.

I hope you figure it out and have great success with whatever it is you are going to do next!

Are you serious, do you know I have never wanted a pool room but if I did...I always wanted Westminster Family Billiards. What a trip that you would say that one.

It was closed for quite a while but is now reopened and I believe for sale.
With your influx of energy it could be made into more of a family place, with leagues and instructional school.
