HOLLYWOOD BILLIARDS EIGHT BALL, Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

Pro Eight Ball rules. You can break from anywhere behind the line, and you CAN win on the break, if you make the eight. You are what you make! Cue ball fouls only. I haven't yet decided about jump cues. Input needed.

Jay does the house have rules on jumping?

If so use their rule.

Just a suggestion.

My vote for playing 8-ball no jump cues.

The IPT is using the format of "You are what you pocket on the break" now.

The IPT are no longer a professional tour, just a series of occasional exhibition matches, a website and a slew of unpaid debts, so I don't think their rule set should have any bearing on other events. They also allow players to climb on the table, should everyone do that?

The only other organization I know of who play by this rule is the APA, which is for amateurs playing on bar boxes. This rule is not appropriate to Pros playing on 9' tables. Part of the major skill in good-quality 8 ball is being able to select the best set after the break. Having this rule can penalize players who make a ball on the break.

And yes, jump shots and jump cues should be allowed IMHO. This is a modern game with modern equipment. If you want to go back to 1945 play the 1/15 in the side pocket rule and last pocket on the 8 ball.

Oh, and are they still using those plastic racks at Hollywood Billiards? It seemed real hard to get a tight rack with those things the last time I was there.

Tough choice on which tournament to go to:( . I hate seeing two awesome tournaments being held the same weekend in Southern California, especially when it seems like big tournaments seem scarce out here. Since the Hollywood tournament IS only two days long, is there a chance of moving it to another weekend or do they want it to be a Holiday weekend? I would love the opportunity to play or watch both events if it's possible (although I'd probably be out in two, anyways:wink: ).

Sorry Hilly, Jeff only wants to do it that weekend. He has his reasons.

Okay, after consulting with my board (all two of us), It has been decided that the table will remain open after a player makes a ball(s) on the break. And one more thing, NO jump cues!

Thanks for rules Jay. Good to know, I can't hear too well and nice to know the rules ahead of time.

IMO, by giving the player with open choice after making a ball, will take more of the the luck factor out of 8-ball.

I hate the fact that if a player makes a ball its a crapshoot if one type is open or not. Good call.

Good luck all at the tourney everyone!

Too bad for the rule change. Your committee of two caved in too quick.

The rule change favors the big break. You got what you make is real eight ball. Works the same for both parties.

However I will still play because I love eight ball.

How is that not "real" 8-ball?

BCA rules states table is open after making any ball.

If I remember correctly APA is that way as well.

If you want to go with bar rules why not call kiss??

I plan to be there as well, it will be a great tourney.

IMO the open after the break rule was installed to even up the playing field and to speed up the game, like nine ball when it went to one foul ball in hand. Open after the break takes some of the eight-ball skills out of the game. Much easier than the other way, especially if you have a big break.

APA plays you got what you make.

Heck, if you want "real" 8 ball try the 1945 rules where you have to make the 1 and 15 in the side and the 8 in the same pocket as your last object ball. I've played this a lot with the old boys at a local retirement community and it's great fun, although a single rack can often take 20 or even 30 miuntes to play out.

I've played Eight Ball this way, and the best player will ALWAYS get there. This is a triple tough game.

it took me years to find out 8 ball is my best game, however I knew with it about 2 years and a ton of $$$ 8B last pocket is my second wworst game 14.1 is my worst game. Funny how that works,
