Hosting a Challenge Match?

Anybody here ever held a Challenge match or know how they are run? I.E. Scott Frost played Efren a race to 8 one pocket in Arizona for $5,000. I'm just curious how this is done? It had a bunch of Sponsors. Did the promoter just get the room's cooperation , put up half the purse, and then get sponsor's? I'm just try to understand how you would get some of your investment back. Obviously your not going to make money on it, but how do they get some of it back if they don't own the pool room? I only ask cause i'm interested in maybe putting one of these togather. Thanks for any help.

I don't think there is a way to get money back. But, for real answers, you might want to talk with the guys from The Action Report. Also, it seems that if you back someone, like say you want to back Chris Bartrum against Justin Bergman for 5k, if someone who likes Bergman puts up his 5k against your, and you win, you are not out as much money. But in a winner take all format, I don't see how you get much back.

I believe the person who organized the Frost vs Efren match was Mark Cantrill. He is also the person working the Archer and Earl road show I believe. I don't have any contact info, but I'm sure someone on here does.

The room was Kolby's in Tempe, AZ. You might call and talk to someone over there about it as well. They have been known to host various different events of this kind.

Being a part of that event at Kolbys I know that Mark worked hard to make it happen. It is not easy to get that money together but he got alot of sponsors and good supporters to have that event. If you fly both players in and put up some money they will play for it,I think if you contacted 2 players and said you guys come and do a challenge match and the winner gets 5K they will be on a plane quickfast in a heartbeat.

I agree. Fly Lenny and I in and we'll play for whatever you got. Just cover the expenses.

Where do you expect this event (if it can be arranged?), to be held? On what kind of table and with what kind of cloth?

Who are you wanting? Efren and Cliff? Where are you? Maybe I can help

Miami / Hollywood Florida area. Just note I've never done anything like this before but I'm extremely interested in putting it togather. As for where to host the event I'm not sure if it would be better to do it at a local pool hall or rent a small ballroom at Hotel and get a good table in there with decent seating. As for table either a Gold Crown V or something from Diamond, cloth simonis either green or tour blue.. 860? Like I said I'm asking because I would like to put it togather and get sponsors. I understand something like this will take alot of planning, coordinating with sponsor/prospective sponsors, contacting the players, flying them here, lodging them, other expenses etc. Do you just randomly approach the the people who you think might be interested in sponsoring. Should you secure the players commitment first or the sponsors.

Prospective sponsors? Brunswick, or Diamond, Predator cues, Sardo, Simonis, Aramith.

Any suggestions, advice etc is appreciated.

It can either be very simple or next to impossible. It just depends on how much money you have. If you can put up $10,000 for the guys to play for you will have no problem getting your pick of players. Not losing your azz on the deal however is not really in that equation.

If you are a great marketing guy with some connections in the local community and are willing to hustle for a few months you may be able to put together enough sponsorship money to make something happen.

The Action Report may be be able to help you put something together as well. We could partner with a room in the area and use our contacts to set up a match if their is one to be made and broadcast the whole thing.

Unless you just have bales of money to throw at these things it is a b!tch to put them together. It is a brutal proposition to try and make any meaningful return on an investment.

Also I can tell you the sponsors you mentioned probably will be VERY little help with cash sponsorship. All this is not to discourage you from making something happen. Just go into it with your eyes open. If you can build a strong enough network and have good organizationanl skills you can pull it off.

If there is anything TAR can do to help just let me know.
