Hot and Cold

I think I have to be the most hot and cold player ever.

I played two matches against the same player today, a 100 point game of 14.1 and a race to 7 in 9 ball. I lost the 14.1 match 100-23. With a score line like that you would think that he ran a crap load of balls. Nope, I just couldn't get anything going, on top of that I had little to no chances, and by the time I did I was too much of a basket case to take advantage. Things were going so bad that I had to put my cue down and sit away from it just to make sure I didn't do something regretable lol, :D.

In the second set of 9 ball, I won the lag and broke and ran a 4 pack. I broke in rack 5 and played safe on the 1 ball. I was left with a shot and I ran out. The same thing happened in the next two racks allowing me to win 7-0, with my opponent shooting only three shots.

From pathetic to perfect, go figure. I left after the second match as I didn't want to push my luck.

I can't wait to find some consistency in this game. Some days (or hours from time to time) everything is effortless, the cue ball goes where I expect it to and the object balls can't go anywhere but the pockets. Other days are a struggle. But the fact that I only play twice a week probably doesn't help. But I am buying a table in the new year which allow me play every day, which I am sure will help immensely.

Nonetheless I experienced this kind of thing last year and came out a much better player. What keeps me coming back to the table is knowing that in a year I will be better than I imagined. My worst days are much better than my average days last year and I always feel that I am improve week after week.

Sorry for the rant, I probably lost most of you after the first two paragraphs :D. But it is always kind of cathartic to rant every once and a while.

I know what you mean. It takes me at least an hour of playing just to get in my proper stance. It takes that long just for my back to loosen up enough to be able to stroke the balls smoothly. It's something I have to deal with since my back was broke in 1981. I have to pratice at least 2 hrs. prior to a match just to get comfortable with my stroke. Shooting cold i suck. Thats my rant.

Cameron: Two different games, two different skill levels required. Also 14.1 has a small amount of equal offense, where in 9-ball may have none......SPF=randyg

what game does that player prefer?

You admit that you let the drubbing you were getting get into your head in the 14.1 game. Could be that the other player had the same thing happen in the nine ball when you came out firing unexpectedly.

The worst enemy of any pool player is doubt. Let a little sneak into your head and you are usually a gone goose.

I was just surprised in retrospect that I played so badly in one match and played and then played one of the best 9 ball matches of my life.

He prefers 14.1 as well, however he enjoys 9 ball far more than I do.

Your absolutely right about the mental game though, I think I would do well to pick up some books on the mental game of pool. I am usually very good at coming from behind. I usually expect to win right up until the last ball. However if I am very behind in a match, and I can't hit my hat, I sometimes become a basketcase and things just get worse.

I guess I still have a long road ahead of me.
