yeah its kinda pathetic when htown closes due to the temp alone, when just days before a guy in chicago sent me a photo of the snow they have to plow each morning to get out the driveway
Chicago here. Not as crazy as by Rusty. But Sunday was -10 and the bar was packed for league and qualifiers.I grew up in Chicago and now live in South Louisiana, and my favorite season is upon us - Locals panicking because it’s below freezing for the 2 days per year it’ll be below freezing.
As a result, my APA match last night was postponed, even though the roads were perfect, it was just below 32 outside. The night before there was some freezing rain, but conditions all day were sunny and breezy which means any thin layer of black ice was evaporated by noon, even if temps never got above freezing. But temps did get above freezing by 1PM, so that meant the roads were completely fine well before league time. It made sense to cancel things in the morning (no salt trucks down here), but canceling anything in the afternoon was ridiculous.
Meanwhile, I wanted to get some racks in a more social setting, and our local hall closed (also for no good reason), so I ended up making the haul down to Buffalos - which involves crossing a 23 mile long bridge.
I think I’m going to propose a team building activity where we fly to Chicago, grab rental cars, and do donuts in an empty Walmart parking lot when it snows.
Our APA territory allows makeups (within two weeks) until the last 4 weeks of the session, then none are allowed (save for a crazy weather event, then its gotta be made up that week...like this week). It is usually up to the team that has their players there, and most of us usually work with the team needing the makeup, unless they are habitual offenders, or wouldn't work with us before. (Funny how that works, isn't it?) Fortunately it doesn't come up often, and many of us have been in this league together for some time, so we mostly get along pretty well.See I refuse to do makeups. If one team refuses the other team has to double play or forfeit. There is a group captain text between all Sunday team captains and I let all the other captains know we don’t do them. I mean if it’s a big holiday we will do one or two makeup matches but are not going to do all 5 as makeups. The other team better get at least a couple people there.
Do they do makeups in other leagues? I used to bowl in a bunch of leagues and never had a makeup even once. The other team didn’t show they lost.
The actual rule is that only one person can give the coaching to the player. Other people on the team can confer with the coach. The player needs to be away from them while they confer. The rules do not dictate whether or not that can be done at the table. We've always applied it as the actual player needs to be away from the conferring players, even at the table. (The player has to go to the other end of the table and wait for the actual Coaching person to talk to them.)Playing well for my speed this session. 3-1 on the session with two wins coming vs. good sl7's. 3 BnR's. Last night I beat a strong 5 ,5-1. My 5 wins were in 7 innings total.
Here is a scenario for league captains or experienced players. Playing a match a couple weeks ago. This bar has 3 diamonds lined up side by side, so 6 teams were playing at the same time. I am at the table with one of my players who had called a timeout. One of my new, young players evidently saw something and thought I should know about it, so he came out to the table. I was about to tell him to go back to his seat when from across the bar, our league rep. starts screeching about how that is illegal and only one person at the table during a timeout, etc.
Mind you, we were not playing her team, they were playing 2 tables away. I firmly, but sort of politely informed her that her input was not needed, and we would take care of our match. She again, very loudly, stated the rule to me and let the entire bar know that it was a foul. At this point my young player is embarrassed and I'm pissed. I told her to get her azz back to her match and that I would handle any issues with my players, and that if the team we were playing had an issue (they didn't) we would handle it amongst the two captains. She returned to her seat mumbling about rules being for everybody or some other some such nonsense.
Last night some of the other captains told me she tried to file an unsportsmanlike complaint against our team and has been asking the other captains if they had noticed us breaking the rules. The LO rightly said she should chill out. Last night we beat her team 13-0. She was a no show. KArma is a bitch.
Fast forward a month and to the next Masters session. The LO forced himself into a grunting reply after I said hello when we arrived at the same time....lol. Seconds later he was all smiles to others standing beside me.Nothing can screw up an APA league worse than a sorry League Operator. In the sixteen years I played APA, I had a good LO for the grand total of two SESSIONS!!! The current LO's are the main reason I dropped out of APA (no, not the only reason).
We ended up on with the short end of the stick on the make up, but still walked away with an overall win in the team match up.Good luck in your scheduled make-up match. Your team deserves to win it.
I found my 8b game went up a notch after a covid forced deep dive into 14.1 at home. I navigate patterns and manage clusters differently these days.playing such bad 8 ball holy crap, considering stopping all 8ball period for some time
and just do 1pkt , 14.1 and carom
Tonight is VNEA league well true to form I beat myself 2 of the 3 games played rattling the last ball before a chance to shoot the 8 ball tomorrow night I hope will be better .
Before tonight I was ranked #9 out of 46 players , time to bear down and get my head back into the game !
