How can we as players really tell if an Aiming System is a Gimmick or not!!!!!

Now that is funny shit John, I think I will refer you as Doctor John from this point forward!!!!

No no, I should have clarified that. I am not a doctor. I am only giving out advice based on some headache reduction systems I have learned over the years. The systems that work for me to get rid of headaches may not work for you. You can try them and see if they help the headache to go away and if so then great. If not, well then you still have a headache, sorry, try another system or just wait until the feeling goes away.

The advice about the pills comes from doctors who have prescribed such headache eliminating pills to my wife in the past. You know if a doctor who studies such headache reducing systems tells me one I have to try it to see if it works. And we did and it did. So I am just passing on the advice that the way to get a shortcut to a headache-free state of being is to use the take-a-pill system. At least in our case that's what works best.

Yawn! I just had breakfast in the cafeteria. They serve a very nice French Toast here, on Thursdays. It comes with a sausage patty and a fruit cup. Let me just slip into a fresh pair of Depends, and I'll be right with you.
Okay. Now where were we.
Ah yes. Aiming systems.
I had a dream last night that I was wearing a pair of piss stained long-johns with an eight-ball stenciled on the front and a pink tutu. After a couple of pas de duxes, I would find myself running to the center of the stage, pivoting, then moving to the edge. I kept doing this over, and over, until finally I woke up in a cold sweat.
I think aiming systems are like arch supports. They feel good for a while, but over time will make a cripple out of you.

If anyone ever teaches you anything, YOU TOOK A SHORTCUT!! You either take shortcuts, or you sit by yourself and try and figure out everything there is to know by yourself. I said there are shortcuts. I never said there was a magical way to suddenly learn one thing and be great. Big difference, lost on many.

As far as your guy that you know- that means nothing without posting something to evaluate. You may very well think he is right, he may think it, but he may be very wrong. No way to know without posting something to check out.

The word 'shortcut' is getting tossed around like it's a dirty word or a way of cheating to improve your game. Many of us take a shortcut when we use an instructor or read an AZ post about a part of the game. It's not a shortcut when you learn something from an outside source and it gets you a little more speed. It's what you're supposed to do unless you're content being a banger and tipping a few with the guys.

Use the word shortcut for a short term fix that usually creates problems down the road. Use the word instruction when you're speaking about gaining knowledge. If you weren't born a natural you better start looking around. Osmosis is a good thing, but nobody ever truly learned anything by staring at the cover of a book.

Best,
Mike

Got my waders on now..

This post has degenerated into the usual mush. Learning is not a "shortcut". If I'm watching a crappy player and pick up on something that happens unintentionally and learn from it, you're calling that a shortcut? Give me a break.

You can watch all of the videos, read all of the books and get lessons from all of the instructors, but it is all a waste of time and money unless you can properly apply that information. Knowing and doing are two different things. Being able to figure out how to move around a table and which shots to take and when and how to play a good safety are not things that are easily taught to somebody that can't see them without help.

How many people have you known that have bought DVDs, gotten lessons, etc, and still haven't been able to improve much if at all? It is a huge combination of things. Do they have the desire? Do they have the drive? Do they have the potential?

Go ahead and crap on my post since I'm still a 'B' player, but hey, I'm still improving. Like most pool players, I also don't have $200 to throw down for somebody to tell me that I keep pulling to the left and that locking up whitey is a good safe, so I have to learn as much as I can from what I see 25 or 50 cents at a time.

I just went back and read ALL of your posts. You are right. If you used logic, many on here would flip out for the simple reason you haven't used logic in any of your posts.

You are an avowed C player, an avowed trouble maker, you think anyone that can make more than 6 out of 10 straight in shots is a liar. You, are nothing more than a troll. It's amazing how many times you have tried to tell players they don't know what they are doing, and you don't even know what english is.[/QUOTE

Whether I am a trouble maker or not, does not matter. What matters is how you take things. I try to be devils advocate sometimes and sometimes I back off if saying something may hurt someones feelings.

If you are trying to advertise that I'm a trouble maker...you got it all wrong.

On this particular topic that you and a few others profess to know all too well, I can care less anymore.

I never said books are useless. That's the problem with you guys. You take one thing and turn it completely around to be the most negative way of looking at things.

English? well, if you think that straight in shot is easy you have absolutely no idea what english is.

Well, I agree with everything except the part in red. To me, a shortcut is just a faster way of reaching your goal. Now, if we were talking about building a house, I would agree. But, we aren't. I don't feel it applies to pool in that reference, any more than it would apply to finding directions when driving somewhere.

Good job making the point. We all want to improve, and there are many ways to do that. There are many things we can use to shorten the learning curve like books, CDs and instruction. Without them, we are taking the long road to improvement. With them, we are effectively taking a shortcut.
