how do i perform this shot (earl strickland)?

I call shots like this one a "going around the neighborhood shot".

Sometimes I will need the cue ball to go all the way forward, then come all the way back up table. Sometimes draw will not work due to blocking balls. Or the cue ball naturally wants to go forward off the shot.

One way to get the cue ball to travel a great distance is speed.

Another way to get the cue ball to travel a great distance is massive amounts of "running english" or spin.

Hit just the cue ball at the rail at an angle and use running english. You can see the spin take effect and actually speed up the cue ball when it hits the rail. So it comes off the rail faster than it first hit the rail. The spin speeds the ball up!

Next try the same shot hitting with the opposite english. (If running english above was 3:00, try 9:00.) Notice how this slows the ball down.

So you can use lots of running english (left 9:00 or right 3:00) to help get the speed up to get the cue ball to travel all the way around the table.

Then you can mix this with draw to get the cue ball to come backwards after contacting the OB, (then spin speeds up the ball when it hits the rail) or mix it with follow (then spin speeds up the ball when it hits the rail).

I have to thank my friend William Fuentes (www.williamfuentes.com) for doing this little video. Excuse me. I've been fighting a cold the past two weeks so I look like the walking dead. Toward the end of the video, I show another (and easier) application of the same stroke.

As you can see, it's tough to avoid the side-pocket (at least on GC IVs)

I will go ahead and say it before someone else does......

LOVELY!!!!!!:D

...I was hoping to see that Donkey English Method.....Perhaps next time...:)

Wow! That was great. How long did it take for you to get the deflection and swerve dialed in?

I was pocketing it immediately but it took two or three shots to get the spin just right.

are there many people who can shoot this shot well with a low deflection shaft? it's one of those shots that seem slightly more suited to a solid, consistently high deflection shaft. shot it again a couple of times tonight and i struggled with my ob-1.

i used to be able to do it ok with a normal shaft. don't get me wrong i know i just need to practice it, just curious if anybody agreess that this shot plays a little more 'natural' with a normal shaft.

tried this shot tonight for about 5-10 minutes and wasnt making the shot or position very regularly, guess i'll be practicing this again another night

what a babe...

Dude, who is the ridiculously hot babe playing on the table behind you in the light blue?! Nice shooting btw.

Of course there are! You can get insane amounts of spin with both the ob-1 and 314-2, sometimes a little too much!

I know Earl himself though prefers a non-laminated shaft. It's all personal preference really. It's about what you like, and are comfortable with.

She's one of the waitresses there. She's in the league and was playing a match at the time.
