How Do You Play This Shot?

If you miss and dont call safe, your opponent can either accept the table or give it back, should the cb get safe. The rule is to eliminate lucky hooks. A played safe needs to be called, just like a pocketed ball IMO.

I've only played BCA rules, only time opponent can pass is if you slop a ball in while missing your called pocket.

I hear players call "safe" under that rule set and can't understand why.

I was not aware of the rule set where you can turn the table back over after a lucky safe.

Thx for the info.

Here it is in better wording.

Call Shot/Safety: Call Shot:Players have the option of either calling their shot or calling a safety. Aside from obvious shots, the shooter must specify which ball and which pocket is being called. If a player is shooting a bank, combination or any kind of ambiguous shot, the player must call the shot. If a player calls a shot and misses, the incoming player will have the option to shoot or make his opponent shoot again. No matter how many times a player misses a called shot, failure to pocket that ball legally or wrongfully pocketing the ball in another pocket allows the opposing player the option to shoot or make his opponent shoot again. Call Safety: If a player calls a safety, the incoming player does not have the option to make his opponent shoot again. The only exception is when a player calls safe and pockets a ball. If a player calls safe, legally hits the object ball and thereafter pockets any ball in their safety attempt, the opposing player has the option to shoot or make their opponent shoot again.

Nice video tough shot

This is Joe Tucker demonstrating this shot:

I'd be more comfortable trying to bank it to the bottom right pocket with the right amount of speed to hopefully leave my opponent a bank shot if i miss.

Nice video. I would have trouble with the thin cut, might be able to get away with the 3 rail but would probably do the kiss back with a little low to leave the 9 where it was and return the cue to the head rail where it began. Not a fun shot however you do it.

So the shot is from the finals of last weekend's Mezz West State Tour Stop #15 at Hard Times Sacramento. The score was something like 7-4 in favor of Oscar Dominguez over Vilmos Foldes. After a few safeties, Vilmos leaves this layout for Oscar. He calls the 9 in the side, and although it was a 2-way shot (trying to put the 9 and cue ball back where they were originally), it's still a crazy awesome bank. One that I'm looking forward to seeing on YouTube once Desiree gets a chance to upload it. When it's uploaded, I'll link it here.

Thin the nine and leave him like he left you. Let your opponent be the dumbass to attempt the bank.

I think the shot depends on the shooter's true percentage of executing a good thin-style safety from there. There are so many things that can go wrong with the safe, that the bank looks like a better play for alot of shooters. So some should play safe, some either safe or offense, and some always offense. In other words, don't think there is a clearly correct play for all shooters there.

FYI, many options for shots like these are demonstrated in the following videos:

NV B.11 - End-of-game frozen rail cut shot offensive option
NV B.12 - End-of-game frozen bank shot offensive option
NV B.13 - End-of-game frozen kiss-back safety option
NV B.14 - End-of-game frozen cut shot safety option
NV B.15 - End-of-game frozen reverse bank shot offensive option
NV B.16 - End-of-game frozen 3-rail two-way shot option

When the safety is just as tough as the shot (depending on the player), go for the shot. If you miss, you still might get lucky and leave your opponent tough.

Good thread,
Dave

Shoot the 9 straight on and choose to either hit it hard enough to double kiss the CB back to the same rail its near now and leave the 9 down by the rail its at or slow roll it and double kiss it soft leaving the CB on top of the 9...either way a safety is the right shot.

THIS... go straight at the 9, double kiss the CB straight back up... that's IF the 9 ain't froze... if it is, same shot, get the CB back up to the end rail. No way you'd go for the bank with that 10 in the middle of the table... sell out city.
Thinning the 9 and going back up table is the other move, but I've seen guys miss the thin cut and give BIH... depends on your skill.
