How Important Is it to Own/Use a Break Cue (9 Ball/8 Ball)

I understand what you're saying and sometimes I thought of going that way with a softer break since all I do is spread them out and normally not get a ball in on break but I spread them so well I'm still trying to find my spot to break from that seems to yield the most breaks with getting a ball in.
Check out Dr Dave's Breaking video

if you cant run out your primary objective is to hook him and get ball in hand. or just leave shots they cannot make.
that is if you want to win. if you want to dream of running out then do so.

So a player that can't run out is supposed to hook their opponent, get ball in hand & not be able to run out? A bad player is a bad player. If one does not possess the ability to run out, they probably don't have the skill or knowledge to play a useful safety either.

I will however concede that a simple safety is easier than a run out.

Sometimes a game is just a back and forth battle of attrition for some players.

There are no easy shots or easy safeties, sometimes the runout is difficult because of clusters or a lot of balls near rails ect., I spend time working on my safe game, I find it difficult to play a lock up safety on a good player, you will often need to control the cueball and object ball with perfect speed, I missed a couple of "easy" shots tonight in practice because I took them for granted......

of course i am not talking about someone who can't even play a safe. but someone who can play okay, like i bet many or even most here can but that cannot run out after the break very often.

if you can, then improving your break is paramount for you.

Why stop with just having a break cue? Have a cue for draw shots, then one for follow shots and one for extreme side spin. All of them need to be custom made out of different materials for maximum accuracy and power.

Exactly.

And you must wear special pool clothing and shoes.

A specially-made, temperature-controlled case is a MUST, too.

While you are sitting on the bench watching the other guy run out, you must ensure your cue maintains the perfect temperature for maximum performance should you ever get back to the table.

I think they call that game golf......

I always used my playing cue to break, from southwest to cuetec, never had a tip mushroom (I do my own tips and press them except my current Tiger Onyx, which hasnt mushroomed either) or otherwise damaged and shape it maybe once every three months...I break at full speed, none of that soft sissy breaking...never liked the idea of carrying a bunch of cues around..but at the end of the day, if you feel you benefit from having a break cue, get one, if not don't...

Just get an AI Robot to play for you problem solved, if you wanna spend a lot of money on equipment be my guest knock yourself out it's not my money.

People who are APA 2s and 3s buy expensive break cues.

They can't even control a playing cue yet, but they think they need a break cue to shoot maybe two breaks a night with and they still haven't mastered hitting the head ball squarely.

Go figure.

Seriously? You overthink everything this much? Not even the best players on the planet go to these extremes.
I watched Yapp fiddle with a series of weight bolts for damn near 5 hours, some Chinese players have different shafts, butts or combination of the two for different games.
Whatever works i guess but i just don't see the need to be so ultra-specific for breaking.
I happen to agree with you though. Anything is useable, and good players figure out the equipment, the equipment doesn't make the player.

Lessons from a PBIA billiards instructor would probably be more valuable for an APA 2 or 3.......

If you have a break cue it really doesn’t do you any good if you do not have break chalk to go with it. Break chalk provides a firmer grip for maximum power and control.

You can make your own break chalk, you take a cube of Masters chalk and soak it in milk overnight and it becomes Milkchalklot.......

Some players keep a break cue in their pool case. How necessary is this?
During my early yrs, I'd always find one ''off the wall'' that worked just fine. It will help you choose one if you make that choice. Weight & shaft thickness are different.
