How important is shaft collar?

If my cue butt has a collar, how important is it for the shaft to also have one (non-piloted, 3/8x10)?

What are the effects if using a shaft with no collar?

None

None other than it would drive me nuts just thinking about it. I want them to match.

Ha! Funny, because I am using a Sugartree cue with another shaft that has a black collar. Looks terrible! No collar would look better than a black one married to the brown one on the forearm.

The shaft could split right at the joint leading you to have a worthless shaft. Seen it happen to a couple McDermott sp’s.

I have a Huebler sneaky, 1980's, no collars.
No splitting. Best hit of all my cues. Broke with it a lot.

sneaky petes have no collar on the shaft or butt and have been used as players for ever
just sayin

.

......I use blue painter's tape for my shaft collars. .....the wood stays new looking and never had a problem with splitting.

With a 5/16x18 pin into a nylon insert in the shaft. Different animal compared to a 3/8x10.

How many sneaky’s use a 3/8x10 pin though?

yeah, but what if forearm has a collar? does it matter?

You specifically asked for opinions on a 3/8x10 fitting shaft, so far I’m the only one who has addressed your concern. Let me find out if one of the guys who had his McDermott break still has it, and I’ll show you what potential problems lie to a collarless shaft tapped for a 3/8x10 pin.

Collarless cues

It really depends on the who makes the cue , how the cue is designed and the owner .

Example is if you bought a collarless laminated LD shaft .

My experience
Dealing with laminated collarless LD shafts warranty .
None of the Laminated LD shaft makers will warranty their line of collarless shafts..
Their answer is always the same ,,, sideward pressure broke the one or both shaft and the joint on the butt of the cue ……………..
Not hard to look up what the cue companies will and will not warranty .
Most people like me think all new cues ….. come with some kind of warranty even the aftermarket Laminated LD shafts …
That is not the case when dealing with collarless shafts .

Just the way it is ,,, on wood to wood joints , when you screw the pin into the shaft the threads outside diameter is always slightly smaller then the pin ..

Point being there is always going to have some slight amount of outward pressure that will make all collarless shafts prone to crack ..especially laminated shafts.

Because I repair cues I only see what has failed and I get a first hand look at that cue companies workmanship and warranty polies and their warranty departments attitudes , which makes me not want to buy certain cues and/or performance shafts collarless or not .. ,

Personally my thoughts are if I cant warranty it I will not make it.
Not all cue companies think as I do …

jerry olivier makes sneaky's with a 3/8 x 10 pin 'the shaft has not collar and the play VERY solid

i think your most educated answer would be in the ask the cuemaker forum
but
fwiw
i asked about having a non piloted not collared shaft (ob1) for a 5 16 x 18 cue and was told no problem ie not having a pilot or collar ( i was more focused on the no pilot in my question )

2 highly regarded Cuemakers said they wouldn't make shafts for me without collars, coz of increased likelihood of failure.

I don't even ask anymore,

Forget about if the shaft splits. Ask yourself if you want a genuine Wallabushka. If the answer is yes then there can be no collars. If the shaft splits get a new one. This is the price you pay to play with a Wallabushka, that ain't no Wallabushka.

I seldom get to play with my full splice rosewood to maple sneaky, but when I do, I really like it, completely stealth.
