How it feels trying to get a nit to bet!

True, but it kills a lot of action when lesser players are so scared, they think they couldn’t win no matter how much weight you gave up. Some are so game though, they won’t accept a spot from anyone, but still, losing can get old. I would rather play a lot, and a closer contest is just more fun.

The brutal truth is that the lesser player rarely wins regardless of spot. I always fall back on an old member here whose name I have forgotten now. He was an honorable gentleman and was playing for fun so he always tried to set up an equal match. He kept excellent records and when he went back over them he found he won 75% of the time when giving a spot!

I think the thing is even if a person isn't a nit they make a game where they have to play well to win, not their belly to the ground 100% best game. When things get real the better player has more reserve than the lesser player.

The one being dishonest.
Which I guess is the guy unwilling to take responsibility for any ticket in spite of his claim of safety. On the other hand, the other guy starts a big conversation about a (perhaps) small risk. To the extent that nittery is refusing to "go with the flow", they both seem to qualify.

I don't know about getting a nit to play but I suspect going into Buff's flashing a little cash and telling the counterman you are looking for action will get you all the action you can stand this weekend. No shortage of people still around licking their wounds and wanting to recoup a couple grand I suspect.

a nit is one who doesn't bet high and is afraid of losing his money so doesnt play, or bet small. and maybe you dont know that he is always on short money and needs what he has. doesn't make him a bad person or one to look down on. if you do then you are the bad person.

and a smart gambler always tries to get the best of the bet or game. that is the definition of a smart gambler. and lets his good games win all they can and quits as soon as he sees it is not a good game. the good gamblers tend to have money and others should admire them but since they really are jealous, as they cant win.
a smart gambler and a nit are two different people and both have a place in life. and that doesn't represent their character at all.

My point was and remains that it is a matter of perspective. A person sees themselves as a smart gambler when they stay away from the high risk matches. Other people see these people as nits since they only get in the grease when they think they have everything their way.

Perhaps the funniest part is that the people that consider themselves smart gamblers see other people as nits for being just like they are themselves!

It doesn't matter if you consider these people smart gamblers or nits the only way you are going to get them on a table is to make them think they are getting the sun, the moon, and a few stars. So you lay down a bit to trap them. Now you are a low life hustler!

It is a funny dance but many people can't look at anything but their own perspective. They see themselves as smart gamblers and others that insist on matching up the exact same way as nits!

a person needs to look at the whole picture and do what works best for themselves as no one else is going to do it for him. we each think differently about similar things and that makes the world as it is. when gambling you try to do what gives you the best chance of winning and winning the most. as long as you dont cheat or lower yourself to below human standards.

and your opponent is trying just as hard to win your money. even if he is not capable enough to do it.

Twice in my life I hustled somebody that wasn't trying to hustle me. It wasn't for big money and I was fifteen, young and dumb. Local small time hustlers had told me that the hustle was just part of being a pool player and I believed them. Tried it once, didn't like it although I was successful. Tried it again about six months later, still didn't like it. In thousands of match-ups after that I never again went with an active hustle. That isn't to say that I didn't lay out a spread but nobody had to bite. Everyone I hustled was trying to hustle me.

I still feel bad about the two people I hustled for less than a hundred dollars total over fifty years ago. The thousand plus that tried to hustle me with the vast majority coming up short? You mess with the bull ...

I very rarely bet on pool. I know "money won" is supposedly sweeter than "money earned" but I don't get the dopamine rush from winning money. I honestly don't care much about money. I have enough to live comfortably and pay my bills but I won't ever be going to dinner with Bill Gates or paying cash for a new bass boat. Money is a tool and if I have an extra $50 or something, I'm buying cue making supplies, tools, a new skillet, etc. I figure one in the hand is better than two in the bush, so I'm buying something for myself with a guarantee to materialize, rather than a hope of doubling my money.

This isn't 1930 and my livelihood isn't coming from my pool winnings, it's coming from my day job.

I don't know if this is "nitty" or not but I also don't go around trying to get money games. I'll play cheap sets for something to do, race to 5 for $5 or play for a drink or something if approached.

Truth is many peopled not gamble, it is no crime.

To those who complain about NITS not want to Gamble with you.

Are you really GAMBLING, or STEALING?

My favorite paragraph of 2025 thus far! ^^^

FTR, I've gambled one time in my life (in pool). I saw a post from a fellow AZB'er that was going to be in the Arlington (TX) area and wanted to know if someone wanted to meet up and play some cheap sets. I told him I wasn't a gambler, but that it sounded like fun (besides, everyone on here that gambles said that playing for money will make you play better). The day I met him, I had stuffed $100 worth of twenties in my pocket that I KNEW I wasn't going to come home with.

To this gentleman's credit, after he had taken my third or fourth twenty, he offered to give me a spot, which I refused.

A couple of days after I had surrendered $100 of my hard-earned money, I was asking myself what kind of gambling was what I did.

Was I just a friendly "dead money" type, a person who was "mad at my money" type, or just a guy who felt it was worth the money just to play an unknown for some fun and conversation? IDK

I haven't gambled since and probably never will again. Am I a nit??? I don't think I am.

A nit wants to bet but only on their terms. Not wanting to gamble or wager doesn't make you a nit. I was the only one in my group obsessed with pool so I soon rose above everyone I knew. After that I tried to resist playing for even a beer and never played for more. I try to stay with the same policy with friends on AZB. I find most didn't want to bet either, felt obliged to like you did.

The truth is one shot often determines how a session goes. In straight pool we see scores of less than ten to 150 or 200. One man got control and when he did let the other man shoot he didn't give him a shot just a chance to swing his stick and maybe break up a troubling cluster. One shot, when the winning player took the lead in the dance, determined everything afterwards.

Nits want to bet but always want things their way. A nit sees somebody they can give two balls to, goes up and tries to make a money game, asking the banger for two balls!

Think of it as paying. You'll get very good returns in those terms.
