how long did it take you to adjust to a new cue?

I am in the process of deciding whether to buy a high end cue as a keeper/player and retire my old cue (not sell).

The problem I seem to have is, everytime I do this, I ended up getting frustrated as I had a hard time adjusting to my newly acquired cue. I have done this with a dishaw, blackboar, predator and some viatore.

I tried keeping the other cue as a collection but I would rather have the cash instead of not using it.

I guess my question is, how long do you try to adjust to your new player before deciding that it is not worth using? Any factors or things you do to adjust quicker to the hit, deflection, etc? Thank you for your advice.

I change so often, it normally only takes a couple of days. I know some guys take months.

Took me about two or three weeks to feel really happy using a shaft with an 11.75mm tip after using one with a 12.75mm tip for six months.

IMO, it will depend on how much time you spend getting used to the changes. I recently switched over to a predator 314 shaft and it took me about 2 weeks of playing everyday to get used to it. The shots that I feel are most affected are the extreme english/cut shots. These shots are the ones I noticed that vary the most when switching over to a different cue. I would recommend that you be mindful when shooting with a new cue and mentally write down what changes you notice so your sub conscience will make the adjustment.

Getting over the feel aspect could take hours to weeks...as states in previous replies. What about the mental aspect? I got a new cue about a year ago and play with it off and on but keep going back to the one I used 99% of the time for 7 years. Maybe it's just me, but I still feel "mentally" more confident with my other cue....even after playing with the new one for extended periods. Just something else to think about! :D

How long to adjust, Id say 2 full days of play

As for the question in general i believe that if you "Know what you LIKE" and find a cue that has the right spec's, it should shoot like you want it....so instead of just buying a cue, have it made with the exact spec's you like...

For example:
I like a very light cue, soft tip, long 14" pro-taper, 12MM, wrapless, wood to wood, ect....
No matter how long i shoot with a Heavy cue with a hard 13.5mm tip, steel joint, leather wrap, standard conical taper, ect I will never really "Like" the cue....

I can still run racks with both but in reality its all in my head along with how comfortable it feels to me.."Still looking for the perfect cue"

Hope this helped!

There is unlikely to be a completely definitive answer to your question. Some folks take more, or less time than others.
Whether the shaft is low deflection can be one consideration. Changes in cue weights may be another. And even wrapped versus wrapless cues can effect a persons comfortability.
I personally play with a cue I made, so it was perfect right from the get go.

I appreciate you asking this question as I just got a new cue yesterday. I took it out and played for about two hours and I haven't gotten used to it. I'm wondering in another thread how much difference the tip will have.

I am going from a laminated ld shaft to a regular wood "LD" shaft and there is a tremendous difference in how they feel and play. Looks like I'm going to have to spend a few weeks getting used to I have no plans of getting rid of it.

Cannot agree more with this.. I have had problems in the past adjusting to new cues with radically different specs. Even cues with not as drastic of a change I still struggled with after weeks of play. So I revert back to the same specs every time now if at all possible.. A few mm on the shaft wont kill me, but weight, joint, and even tip I do not stray too far from these days.

In 2005, my new Pechauer, coupled with my old radial ply shaft, took me as long as it took to get me to the pool room. I was ready right out of the gate.

I picked up a Manzino at the Derby and hated the way it played, took it to my cue guy and changed tips to Ultra skin soft's and now love it.If you can't get comfortable with a cue try a tip change, they are the only thing that hits the ball.

My feeling is that if you have to 'adjust' to new equipment , mostly it's not the correct change for you. Barring making some dramatic mechanics change necessitating the new equipment. (Rarely the case in pool)

IMO :)

Oh yea so.....

Not very long , if at all.

I totally agree. If you can't get used to your new cue after a day or two, you have the wrong cue.

Of course...unless you are going from a Meucci to a Predator. If you do this, it could take months.

I think the answer to your question is
"it depends on what's bothering you about the old one"....

If you can't figure that out, you can switch cues every week and they'll never feel quite right, though eventually you can get used to whatever's bothering you.

If nothing's wrong with the old cue and you just like to collect 'em, then you'll just have to hit a thousand balls with it. But I think your game is gonna suffer if you keep switching for no special reason.

My longest adjustment was almost 2 months going from a regular shaft to a LD shaft. But I was kind of a fish back then. If I tried the same switch today I think it'd be less than half that, maybe as fast as a week. So it also depends on your level. More than 2 months and you definitely got a psychological issue with the cue.

The adjustment to my Meucci E-2 has been a bit tough. I think it's more due to the fact that the shaft is a bit bent and instead of having a medium tip on it like I'm used to it has an extra hard tip on it. I've been miscuing like crazy.

Don't know if this has been covered yet but my biggest problem when I have a new cue is that I tend to baby the hell out of it for a while. Like I don't really let the stroke out and I tend to try and hold the cue ball for position instead of using rails so I don't hit the cue ball too hard. I've only really used predators so I guess I don't have that ld to non-ld problem or vice versa but I do catch myself babying the cue. That seems to be the one thing for me and it takes like a couple of weeks before I can just play normally with it.

Depends on many things... How different the new cue is(Like tip diameter and tip type, are both LD shafts, etc...). I got used to my Poison AR5 really fast and placed 5th in my first tournament with it after 3 days of using it. I got even more used to it after about 10-15 days or so and now it feels natural.

Thanks for the replies. I am really considering getting a Szambotti, Bushka or Ginacue. If similar specs would make it easier for me to adjust to my new player, Ginacue might be the best choice of them all (he can build it to my specs).
