How long does an unused tip last?

The softer the tip, the shorter the on-cue shelf life.

That was my guess. It makes sense that softer tips would be like pencil erasers that would harden up over time. Can scuffing a soft tip bring it back to playing shape, like you sometimes can with an eraser?

I realize that people's experiences vary. I appreciate everyone's responses and the discussion.

Hmmm. My old Palmer Model M has it's original tips. No wonder it has a hard hit.

I also have a few shafts that have their original tips. They're still really good. One is from 1981.

Seeing how it`s the part of the cue that actually touches the ball, spending the money to get two quality tips installed, is a pretty good investement.

Tough question, I imagine every tip is different. I had a cue made in 2003 played with it a few times and put it up, took it out last month and it played fine, but the more I played the faster it went to shit. But, tips are a consumable just replaced them and went on down the road. I'm also, fanatical about shaping and maintaining my tips that probably had more to do with it too.

Puhleeeeeze..drop it!

Well folks, In my 10 yrs. on this site, I thought I had seen every possible Q and A thread, on the exciting subject of cue tips!..Apparently I was wrong!..Somehow, someone will find a new question to ask (almost daily) on this 'mysterious' little piece of leather!..Please, lets get them all out in the open now, so we can end this most boring subject in all of pool, and move on! :(

PS..A much more interesting subject to explore would be, "Does your chewing gum lose its flavor, on the bedpost overnight?"
